Me and some friends are going for a 22 day run on the interrail i June this summer. We have been talking about different routes but at this point we only have figured out a couple of must-see places.
These are Amsterdam, Barcelona, Prague, Italy (mainly Rome) and Croatia (Split i guess), my first though was to begin here (Malmö, Sweden) - Amsterdam - Paris - Barcelona - Marseilles - Rome - Venice - Split - then with some stop get to Prague and then home. Its also possible to end the trip in Poland and go by ferry the last way to the south of Sweden.

My main concern is the lack of time, it feels like a city like Paris doesn't do well in just a day or to but still is almost a have to because of its location in our way to Barcelona.

Do anyone have a smart plan for me/us? A smart way to connect our have to go places with some connecting stop on the way but within the time limits...

prob gonna freestyle a bit anyhow but would be great to have good default plan :)

Hi!

Given the cities you want to visit I would probably do a trip as follows:

Malmö - Amsterdam: With night train from Kobenhavn :arr: https://rail.cc/en/copenhagen-amsterdam-night-train/f3010
Amsterdam - Paris: via Antwerpen - Gent - Lille, not with the expensive Thalys train :arr: https://rail.cc/en/amsterdam-paris-train/f1472
Paris - Barcelona: with night train to Latour de Carol, then with the Petit Train Jaune to Villefranche and onwards via Perpignan - Portbou to Spain (or the other way round: Paris - Perpignan - Villefranche - Latour de Carol - Barcelona) :arr: https://rail.cc/en/paris-pyrenees-barcelona-le-petit-tain-jaune/f4023 This is a little time consuming but the Petit Train is really worth it! :) If time is an issue; skip the yellow train and head straight to BCN, for that I'd again recommend the night train, either Paris to Latour de Carol or Portbou, then continuing to BCN.
Barcelona - Marseille: You can go the whole way with supplement free regional trains via Portbou - Montpellier; there are really nice parts where you go close along the Mediterranean sea. If you decide to go with the Petit Train Jaune, think about going in a circle: Paris - Perpignan by night train, then to Latour de Carol with Petit Train Jaune and down to Barcelona; then to Marseille as described.
Marseille - Roma: You have to do this during the day again; it's quite a long trip, you have to leave early. From Genova to Roma the route is again very nice, but you need to go with an ES City with compulsory reservation: 10€
Roma - Venice: I'd recommend to use a slower IC train with 3€ recommended reservation; if time is an issue you have to go with AV which has compulsory reservation: 10€
Venice - Split: Best option is to go to Zagreb first during the day, then take the night train to Split: :arr: https://rail.cc/en/night-train/zagreb-split-b821/129 You could also think about going by ferry to some other place at the Croatian coast, but there are no InteRail discounts..
Split - Praha: I'd either go via Budapest or Wien
Praha - Sweden: Either go via Poland for a ferry to Sweden or via Berlin and then with Berlin Night Express to Malmö: :arr: https://rail.cc/en/night-train/berlin-malmoe-en-300/58

If you need more detailed help or if you are confused by one of my suggestions ;) just ask.

Yup, as you can see most parts can be made without a reservation so enough place to freestyle. If I look at your trip again, you only need reservations definitely for the Paris - Latour/Perpignan night train (or a TGV/TEOZ during the day) and the Genova - Roma part of Marseille - Roma. If you want to go fast within Italy it makes sense to make reservations for ES/IC/AV trains there as well but you should be able to make them at rather short notice as most services run fequently.
If you want a proper bed on a night train you need to make reservations as well, regular seats are usually free in eastern Europe.
