It's not for a while yet, but next summer me and my friends want to go around Europe after we've finished all our exams etc, and I figured the cheapest way would be to stay in youth hostels overnight.
Trouble is, whilst 4/5 of us will be 18, at the time we will be going, one of us will still be 17 - but will be turning 18 in 2-3 weeks.

My question is, do hostels in Europe accept under 18s in the communal rooms? I know these are a lot cheaper than the private rooms they have available. We were thinking of travelling to some cities - we have a shortlist of Berlin, Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, Milan and Krakow.
What are the regulations? Do they require parents to be travelling with them, or will they just simply not let them in the communal rooms? Or will some let her stay in the communal rooms with parental permission?
If she can't, I guess we'll have to book a 4 or 5 person room - a bit of a pain though, since they're a bit more expensive.

Alternatively, if anyone has any other ideas of accommodation that isn't age restricted, can you help? (we don't want to do tents! since we want to be in cities)

I know the planning is quite early, but we want to get it all finalised by this summer so we can make sure we have enough money and have time to get a job to pay for it all!

Thanks 8)

Hi!

Just a short answer:

- It depends on the hostel whether they accept under 18s or not - but in general I'd say it is no problem, especially if most of you are >18. He/She should just take a small note from their parents with you but I think everything will be ok. If you are in doubt, you can surely contact each hostel before going just to be sure.

- Try out couchsurfing...although it might be complicated as a party of 5. ;)

Thank you! Totally didn't see the reply till now, I'd forgotten I'd posted.

Yeah, one of my friends suggested couch surfing. I guess we'll see if we can find anyone willing to take so many of us!

Thank you 8)
