planning on just taking one backpack
wondering what size I will need e.g. 80litre, ow much clothing i'll need, and any other neccesary equipment i could fit into a reasonable sized backpack. I don't want to be carting round a wardobe on my back
thanks

Well if you carry 80 liter you WILL be carting a wardrobe on your back.. Of course it all depends if you're going hiking or just visiting the cities.
I (18-yo guy) went around Europe for 3 weeks with my 35 litre backpack.
I packed the following:
- 1 pair of jeans
- 1 pair of other pants (lightweight)
- 4 T-shirts
- Underwear, socks
- Toothbrush and travel-size shampoo and stuff
- 1.5 liter bottle of water (MUST HAVE)
- Travel documents WITH COPY of passport and phone numbers to embassy*
- Photo camera, spare 20 quid 'throwaway' phone, chargers and spare batteries
- and most important: CUTLERY. I ate take away food at my hostel a few times and sometimes they don't have (clean/complete) cutlery.
And that's about it.
I did not carry a coat with me since it was August, and the one time it rained I hopped into a nearby bakery for an hour or so. Coats are heavy and you have to think twice about taking one with you (except if you're visiting the UK)! I've packed clothing for a total of 4 days, and washed at a local laundromat for the remainder of my trip. You will have to find a balance between how much clothing you want to carry around, and how much you want to spend on laundromats. For me 4/5 days was fine but I can imagine if you're on the road for 30 days laundry costs can add up quickly.
Do you already have a route planned out btw?
*this might seem silly but afterwards I was very happy I did. I got robbed in Budapest and called the local embassy. I had no bankcards, and cash I withdrawed earlier that day was gone as well. The embassy can actually hook you up with some money to get you home or with another service so you can finish the remainder of your holiday.

I'm travelling out of the U.K. so no need for a coat ;) I'll be starting in paris, barcelona, rome, venice, prague, berlin, amsterdam. Staying for 3/4 days in each. maybe a few one night stopovers in places along the way.
Hadn't considered a cheap phone or embassy numbers
thanks

Im doing a similar route this year (except starting in Holland and visiting Ljubljana, zagreb and budapest as well). We should meet up and drink a beer somewhere.

A simple google search for what to pack led me here, and i noticed that me and my girlfriend are planning for a similar route this year.
Except were planning for a 2 month trip, starting now in mid April in Denmark, and then heading down for a similar route. I don't know when you will head for your trip, but it would be fun to meet up somewhere.

Hi.
I recommend a size around ~60l.
You can wash clothes in nearly all hostels.
Important is the weight of you backpack... simply put one one and fill in 20 bottles of water each filled with 1 litre... a lot ... too much ... ||
There are several topics as well in the forum about backpacks...
Peter :)
