Hi

Im looking to interrail in the summer and want to see as much of the culture and history that Europe has to offer but without going to the expensive overcrowded main tourist cities. Could anyone suggest good alternatives to places like these and also anywhere that you think should be included in such a cultural and historical tour. Im from the UK so am not going to go to UK or Ireland but other than that im open to suggestions. As a medical student i have an extra intrest in medical history and so if anyone knows of anywhere specifically for that it would also be good

Thanks

Hi!

How long do you wanna go?

Some random suggestions:

France:
> Lyon
> Le Puy en Velay
> Clermont-Ferrand
> Ligne des Cevennes or Ligne de Causses
> Carcassonne (it's kinda touristy but really worth seeing)

Spain:
> along the FEVE network (50% discount to the very cheap fares with InterRail) along the northern spanish coast to Ferrol

Portugal:
> Viana do Castelo
> Porto
> Regua (for Douro valley, Vila Real and Lamego)
> Coimbra
> Tomar
> Marvao/Castelo de Vide

Switzerland:

> following the tracks of Bernina and Glacier Express is quite impressive: https://rail.cc/en/glacier-express/f1750 https://rail.cc/en/bernina-express/f1749

Austria:
> Graz ;)

Montenegro:
> I'd go there now as it is getting more touristy every year

Thanks - im looking at either a 15 or 22 continuous pass with as many sleeper trains as possible so days can be spent looking round. Preferably where hostels are needed (maybe 10 of a 15 night stay) i would like them to be in nice quiet non touristy places

I did want to do the glacier express and may decide to pay the money and do it properly.

Is the Little Yellow Train worth a visit? If so are there hostels or cheap hotels at the latour-de-carol end?

Probably want to include Nuremberg, Padua (for a day trip to Venice) and also somewhere near Rome if there is a cheapish quiet place close enough to do a day trip.

Does anyone know of a nice quiet place where a day could be spent on the Mediterranean coast or are all the beaches and villages around there tourist hotspots?

We may try and start by taking the weekly eurostar from london to avignon and then head down to the spanish border before working back up via italy to austria, germany and then belgium/france

Hi,

I would strongly recommed Lund in the very south of Sweden. Lund is probably most famous for its old university and also the successful hospital. You can take a night train from Amsterdam to Copenhagen and from Copenhagen there are direction connection with regional trains (Öresundståg) via the Öresund Bridge over to Sweden and Lund. They first stop in Malmö (captial of the region) and then continue to Lund.

Lund is city full of culture and nice people. In Lund you will find the largest open-air museum of Scania, called Kulturen, which I recommed during summer-time. The Botanical Garden is a very beautiful place too. Then Copenhagen is also a lovely city, but much bigger than Lund. Copenhagen is full of museums and big parks.

You can read more about Lund here: https://rail.cc/en/lund/c

Have a pleasant trip!
