It's not stupid or not but there are internet cafes everywhere and carrying a laptop is more weight and risky..
A pda with wireless would also do the job..

My laptop is too important for me and the work that I do that I didn't take it on the road last summer (considering I have an expensive mac). But the primary reason was also that it sucks to carry it around and you're much better off discovering the world around you then playing games at the hostel all day and clogging up the bandwidth.
But maybe a netbook or a tablet would be fine. I mean, we carry our smartphones around. For the few times you actually need a computer there's always some internet café around. ;)
The availability of WiFi networks depends heavily on which city you're in. A lot of western european cities have wifi hotspots from a local provider which you can only use if you're a member. Budapest is probably the most WiFi friendly because there's always a few open networks around when you're in the city. You can just sit down on a bench somewhere and crank up the wifi. Prague also has a lot of open networks (I remember sitting around in a park called Strelecky Ostrov, an island in the Vltava river and enjoying free wifi)

I always have my netbook with me - small, light weight and a cheap one - not to risky ...
But I only have it with me to answer question here ate the forum and emails.
Otherwise like Baobab and Lucas said already: you have a lot of internet cafes and a lot of hostels offer free or cheap internet access. :)
