I went interrailing for the first time last year, and I'm currently planning a trip to the Balkans for late summer. My plan is to buy a Balkan Flexipass (if anyone has any info on these it'd be greatly appreciated, as info on the net is rather sparse) and visit the following cities (and possibly a couple more) as a rough outline:
Sofia - Buccurest - Belgrade - Skopje - Sarajevo - Zagreb
I have chosen Sofia as the starting point as it seems to be the cheapest place to get flights to from the U.K. I'd also like to fit in somewhere in Montenegro too, but I haven't looked into that one yet.
Any help or info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Balkan Flexipass isn't valid in Bosnia and Croatia. The ordinary tickets would be probably cheaper.
The route from Skopje to Sarajevo is quite long and uncomfortable. Either you should go by overnight train to Belgrade and then change to train Beograd-Sarajevo, but there are only 2 hours to change in Belgrade, that isn't much secure, because of regular long train delays. Or you can take an overnight train Skopje-Podgorica (runs only in summer months, the train ran till 2010, so check at MŽ whether the train schedule is valid in 2011 too) and bus Podgorica-Sarajevo.
I recommend you to get rid of Skopje (not much interesting city) and go from Beograd to Montenegro, for example Cetinje or Kotor. Or make some treks in Durmitor National Park. The railway Beograd-Bar is really worth to visit, so do not outsleep it in a night train 8) ). From Montenegro take a bus Podgorica-Sarajevo.

Thanks for the info and the speedy reply! So would you not recommend buying the Balkan flexipass at all? I've not had much luck finding train prices in the Balkans but I've heard they're really cheap.

I also forgot to mention that I'm under 26, so a Balkan Flexipass for me is only 49euro, which I imagine is a good deal? I think we're going to leave out Skopje and go to Bar as well as somewhere in Montenegro such as Bar or Kotor. Any more info would be great!

Kotor is great, though you need to use the busses to get around Montenegro really. Shame you can't make it to Skopje, it's a weird (and wonderful!) place

Yeah, I was thinking we could use busses to get from Montenegro to Split too, but I'm having trouble finding any timetables, so I may have to leave some of it to chance. I've heard mixed reports about Skopje, I think I'll probably go and see it for myself in the end.
