We are two girls travelling mainly in eastern and central, but need some help with the travel route, as none of us have been on interrail before.

This is how the temporary travel route looks:

Berlin – Praha – Krakow – Vienna – (Bratislava) – Budapest – Ljubljana – Venice - Athens

Is this too ambitious for 30 days? Some of us also wants to go to Dubrovnik and Istanbul, but we are unsure if it will be possible? We will try to catch the night trains, and plan to stay in each city for a couple of days. Does anyone have any opinions on which city to focus on? All destinations sound like they have really much too offer...

Thanks in advance :)

Hi ...

Just to start, think about traveling this way:

Berlin - Prague - Krakow - Budapest - (Bratislava) - Vienna - Venice - Ljubljana - Rijeka/Zageb/Split/Dubrovnik - Belgrade - Sofia - Istanbul

I recommend not to travel to Greece - as the international railway connections are cut off for now:
https://rail.cc/en/new-trains-from-thessaloniki-to-skopje-belgrade-and-sofia/f5508

This trip is possible within 30 days.

Some additional information:

- Have a look at the country topics, you will find there all the connections you want to know:
https://rail.cc/en/countries
If your planing are more fix, I will help you of course with more details. :)

- Vienna-Venice is possible by night train. You can book it online in advance:
https://rail.cc/en/vienna-venice-night-train/f3671

- Venice - Slovenia: https://rail.cc/en/venice-ljubljana-train/f3664

- Dubrovnik doesn't have a railway station. It depends if you want to end up in Croatia or continue to Istanbul. If you want to continue, I recommend you Split or Rijeka.

- Think about adding Lake Bled in Slovenia.

Peter :)

Thank you so much for the quick reply :)

We are not travelling before july, so do you think the railway connections will open again until then? If not, and correct me if I'm wrong, I think it will be possible to take the bus from Patras (We plan to take the ferry from Venice or Acona) to Athens. Say, we're sticking to Greece, which order is the most practical if we also want to include Croatia and Istanbul?

But as we are already planning, we must have some back-up travel routes considering the situation in Greece, so we will definitely consider your suggestion :)

Mmmm... for now I would say: you can't calculate with Greece. Better to plan without it, even in summer!
Or you use buses, but they are not included in InterRail. Prices are okay, not too expensive.

For example by bus from Patras (arriving by ferry like you said) to Athens. Then to Thessaloniki you will have train service again (but I don't guarantee for this summer) - then you even have to cross the border by bus - to Sofia for example to get a connection to Istanbul. :|

So if you want to include Istanbul, Athens and Croatia maybe do it this way:
Berlin-Praha-Krakow-Vienna-Budapest-Croatia
Then by ferry to Italy: https://rail.cc/en/ferry-croatia-italy/f2339
Or by train via Slovenia to Italy.

Italy-Greece by ferry again.

Greece to Istanbul.

Of course you can do it in an other order ... just a personal idea. :)
