Well I'm a complete rookie to this but these are the cities I'd love to visit.
Any advice on whether Istanbul/Athens are worth it and how easy it would actually be to get up to Croatia from Greece.
Any tips for places to stay/visit/ways to travel along the way would also be very much appreciated!

Cheers babes

Hi.

Currently I do NOT recommend to try to travel by train in Greece. I don't know what will be the situation in summer, but for now, avoid it:

Think about a route like this (you can skip cities and do a lot by night trains):

Istanbul - Sofia (you can skip it if you want by direct night train to:) - Belgrade
https://rail.cc/en/istanbul-sofia-belgrade-night-train/f1641

Belgrade - Zagreb: https://rail.cc/en/belgrade-zagreb-train/f4776

Zagreb - Split: https://rail.cc/en/night-train/zagreb-split-b821/129

Split - Rijeka - Ljubljana: https://rail.cc/en/rijeka-ljubljana-train/f4774

In Slovenia you may have a trip to Lake Bled - I recommend it.

Ljubljana - Italy: https://rail.cc/en/ljubljana-venice-train/f3663

In Italy pay attention to the supplements of the Eurostar Italia trains. Use Regional trains or IC trains (3 EUR supplement or free).

Italy - France: https://rail.cc/en/milan-nice-marseilles-train/f3857
The best is to have a an overnight stop in Nice.

France - Spain: https://rail.cc/en/nice-marseilles-barcelona-train/f3420
If you have the time, cross the Pyrenees by the Petit Train Jaune. It is on your way and a real adventure - and absolutely free of any supplements! :)
