until when should we book for hostels or camping? should we book much before our arrival or we could rotate it when we get there...? i ask because what happens if something goes wrong and we won't get there at the right time?

Hi,

for the bigger cities it might make sense to book some days in advance, I'm thinking especially of Amsterdam, Paris...maybe Berlin and Barcelona as well, at least the better hostels get full easily there. I've only been at a full campsite once, last summer in Perigueux/France. We then slept together with some french guys in a small park adjacent to the campsite so it wasnt a big deal. I never had any problems with campsites being full elsewhere (Paris, Benelux, Switzerland,...)

I would recommend to try and get a reservation for hostels (it's not necessary for campsites IMO) as soon as you leave one place for the next city. If you arrive somewhere and still have to look for a hostel it can get pretty annoying quickly.
The worst that can happen is that you will have to move on to another city for a day or two. An important factor of course is for how many persons you need accomodation. When I've been travelling with groups of 5 or six people we always had booked our stay well in advance - on your own you'll always find a place but as a larger group I'd recommend to book in advance.
