Hi I am planning on visiting The Netherlands on the 1st of July 2011.
I am arriving from Harwich, England and visiting Rotterdam for 1night and Amsterdam for 3 nights.
I am travelling with two others boys one 19 and the other 18, we enjoy sports, visiting the occasional scenic location and enjoy nightlife.
Are there any locations that would be good to stay at a reasonble price and lots to do for someone of our age and interests?
are there any reccomended hostels, and what price they are roughly?
thanks :)

Hi!
Wauw, you are comming to Holland!
You want some tips... Hmmm... I would recommend you to be as tourist like as possible.
Make a boat trip, hire a cycle. Visit a coffeshop, get drunk...
:D Well, Maybe not the last two. These are the once most tourist come for. O yes and Sex...
Its easier to tell you what you shouldn't do. One of them is going to rotterdam. Erverything is new built after the second world war.(Bom)
And when you are in amsterdam: Do NOT visit the Anna Frank house or the musea of statues like MJ or K3.
Visit only one musea. Trust me it is enough. Don't take a hotel in the center. You will pay twice as much, And if you want to have dinner for cheap.
Go away form the centrum. Go visit the markets. Maybe you can go to the beach!
Do something weird as asking people there second name or there age. Yes, they wont like you. Just because you are english. You gave our drugs a bad name:D
One english man fell in to the water after using paddo's and now they are iligal. Thet were the best.
Behave yourself and Good luck! (You will need it)
Questions? Post it.

Everyone speaks Dunglish* very well in Holland, and some can even speak the English language proper. If you walk from the Central Station to the Dam square every guy that sells hot dogs will be greeting people in English by default. The nicest people in Amsterdam live in the Jordaan, and it's also where the best pubs are. The city centre has a bunch of nice things, but hanging out at the Vondelpark and going to a live gig at Paradiso or Melkweg are a must. Also there's very, very good food in Amsterdam (Indian, Ethiopian) for reasonable prices. Natives of Amsterdam can sometimes be a bit grouchy towards englishmen, because in the weekends a lot of them come over to Amsterdam with EasyJet planes to get high and harass people on the streets while drunk (not trying to insult anyone, it's the sad truth). But if you're a nice and fun loving person you should have a great time! People overall are very open-minded here.
You're doing the trip alone? I'd love to show you the city and drink a beer somewhere. Concerning hostels I have no idea as I've never used them (I live 20 miles away from the place) but try scanning hostelworld.com. It doesn't really matter where in the city the hostel is located, you're never too far away from the centre (20 minutes by tram/bus max.)
* I call it that because some talk with such a Dutch accent while speaking English, that it's really another language. Like Scottish can be sometimes.

if you want to see a beautiful part of the town, go to Amsterdam- West, juist behing the Calverstraat(main street). It is in the opposite direction of the Red Light District. Nice buildings, cosy streets and bridges and as well a lot of fancy shops/bars/ restaurants. Worth to visit!
ps cheap hotels would be couchsurfing :D

I don´t get why everybody here considers Rotterdam as not worth seeing. I have been living in Rotterdam for over a year and i love this city. It´s indeed no typical dutch town as Delft or Utrecht with small canals and windmill all over the place, but it still has a lot of points of interest that are deifnately worth visiting. In Rotterdam, you will find a cultural diversity that you will not find in any other dutch city.
Furthermore, the area around the Erasmusbrug with its skyscapers is absolutly worth seeing, especially at night. It´s just awesome to sit on the Euromast (a big tower with a panorama platform), have a beer and watch the lights of the skyline or the ernormous harbour. Rotterdam has lots of beautiful parks and recreational areas such as the Museumspark or the Kralingse Plas, which is a lake with a big park around.
If you want to see windmills and canals, fine, go to Delfshaven and you will find a typical dutch neighborhood.
And the most important thing is: There are hardly any tourists in Rotterdam. Everytime i went to Amsterdam, I just couldn´t really relax because of all the people, especially in the centre.
To conclude: Rotterdam isn´t the typical dutch city that you find in books and movies, but if have you like colourful cities it´s a must see in the Netherlands ;)

en so is tat! And-psst-littel old time jokesecret: there they sell the shirts with the sleeves already rolled up-so they can start hard work right away. Also recently mostly in the news dus to persistent poorness of many of its inhabitants. There is a nice hostel in the famous arcitectural ''cube'' flats near Blaak station. And dont forget to eat the french fries (patat) from Bram terlaak or so-tastes much better as in Belgium! Go shopping in the koopsloot=a dive under shopping walkway in the centre.
