Dear Sir,

If I buy a 8 days within a month Pass at £185.00 for Finland, does it mean:

1) Calendar month or can it straddles 2 months, say from the17/4/2011 to 16/05/2011?

2) Can I choose any day within the period or must they be consecutive days only? thank you for your help.

Hej Maurice.

Finland is fine for interrailing. Clean and modern trains on the long distances going from the North to the South.
You can save the hostel using one of the night trains:
https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/finland/fi

Otherwise, not a lot to add - I always enjoy it traveling in Finland.

Peter :)

Dear Peter,

Thank you for your comments. As usual, Finland seems to be a hassle-free country. Would anyone who have experience let me know about his or her troubles? Thank you all.

Dear Peter,

Two questions: 1) Do intercity trains need a reservation?
2) Suppose that on my interrail booklet I enter Rovianemi-Jyvaskyla. Since there is no direct train and I have to get a connection, is that considered One Journey. Thank you.

Hi Maurice.

1) No reservation needed for IC trains in Finland.

2) ONE travel days is from 00:01h in the morning until 23:59h at night. You can use as much trains on such a travel day.
There is as well this special and nice rule for night trains: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train
If you travel from Rovianemi to Jyvaskyla and have to change in between, it doesn't really matter. I would only write in the booklet departure and arrival station.

Have a good time, Peter :)

Hi Peter,

Thank you very much. :D What about Express trains? Do you need a reservation? If yes, how long before the actual Journey? Thank you. I am very impressed by the promptness of your answers.

Hi Maurice,

as far as I know, you only need reservation for the S2 Pendolino trains and night trains. You dont need reservations for other trains (like IC).

Dear Flow, dear Peter,

The Tampere-Rovaniemi express train n 273 departing at 01.15. Where and when do I make a reservation? Is there a cost? Thank you. :?:

Hi.
This is the night train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi.
Seat supplement around EUR 5.
Have a look here at the train 873: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/helsinki-rovaniemi-p-273/171

Dear Peter,

A Finnish friend of mine has called Finis and was told that only the Pendolino requires reservations. Good news. :D Although I arrive at Tampere at 20h30 the train reservation desk will be closed. : :'( I am told they shut quite early. He had to reserve me a night berth and he is going to mail it.

I have received my Interrail Pass. :D Question? How am I supposed to enter 8 trips on one single ticket? there is no room at all! Or am I supposed to ask the conductor a ticket after each trip :?: Thank you.

There should be two rows in the middle of the ticket, one saying month, the other day. There you have to enter each travel day manually at the beginning of each travel day.

Dear Flow,

Fine. But what about the destination? Am I supposed to fill in the the top box, say, Tampere to Helsinki? the problem is that there is only one box. In the package I have received there is only one ticket. Thank you.

No, it is sufficient to write day and date in the boxes.

As far as I know there is no travel report to fill in with the One Country Passes - so it is enough to fill in each travel day in your InterRail pass. :)

Hi Maurice,

no problem. :) I just checked my old tickets and both One Country Passes for the UK and Switzerland didnt have a separate travel report as the global passes do.

Dear Flow, dear Peter,

I am back from Finland. I can only praise the interrail Finland Pass to the skies. No problem at all. Train conductors are most helpful. The trains are spacious, on time, with good facilities: you can still smoke in the smoking cabin. Even the food was good ( I recommend the meat balls with mash, salad and berries for €9.50!).

I got a sleeping cabin from Tampere to Rovaniemi for € 13.00. Just to give you an idea of the real train prices in Finland: a return ticket Helsinki-Jyvaskyla is €100!

On my way to Turku from Rovaniemi I had to change in Tampere. Due to extreme frost the train was an hour's late. Buses were therefore waiting outside the station: one to the Turky train station, the other to Turku harbour for the wiking ships connections! You can beat that. Thank you.

Dear Flow, dear Peter,

I have bought an interrail Finland Passfor the end of December. As you may know, I bought one last year and was very satisfied. Could you tell me briefly if anything has changed since last year? Thank you and best regards.

Hej Maurice,

I have not heard of any changes in Finland. You can find reservation prices here :arr: https://rail.cc/en/train-type/finland/fi

I hope you will have a nice trip! It would be great if you could again share your experiences afterwards. :)

there is just 1 word of caution: for IR-holders there is No need as such to reserve seats for IC-trains. BUT; ALL Finnish local tickets come with a REServation-and seats are not marked (as is usual the case in Germany etc) if they are REserved or not-or for what part. That means at any station someone may come and say s/he has this seat. For a nighttrip that is not the best way to go. Problem is that you can only make the REServation in person at a staffed station-when open, and due to very high labour cost, these hours are very reduced now-even in HElsinki main station (I think only from 10.00!)

Hi Flo,

I will arrive at Helsinki airport. On the VR website Helsinki airport is listed as a departing station. Does it mean that with my interrail Finland pass I can take the shuttle bus from the airport to the Helsinki central train station free of charge?

I don\'t remember if one has to put the destination on the interrail pass? There doesn\'t seem to enough space to do so.

If not, does it mean one can travel as much as one wants - changing trains - with one journey within the imparted time? Thank you.

Hej Maurice,

I had a quick look but I dont think that the IR ticket will be valid on the airport buses. A regular ticket is just 2,70€ anyway.

Unlike the Global Pass, One Country Passes come without a Travel Report. This means you just have to fill in the travel day in your pass (day and month) and then can hop on as many trains as you want on that day.

Dear Flo,

Can I do the following: Board the train from Jyvaskyla to Helsinki early in the morning and come back to Jyvaskyla
with the evening train with only one trip on my calendar? Thank you.

Best regards,

Hi Maurice.
Yes it is only ONE of your travel days on your Eurail Pass if you travel in the morning from Jyväskylä to Helsinki and in the evening back from Helsinki to Jyväskylä.
Take care as some trains on this route are IC trains (free, no reservation required) and some are Pendolino trains (reservation required!):

re airport bus: this is NOT on IR. It is in fact NOT to HEL-main but to Pasila- a station where all trains also stop, 5/6 mins north of HEL, as this shortens the trip to airport for about anyone a lot. Even though it seems anyone pays with a smartcard, you can still pay paper ticket from driver-have small money (no 20/50/100 etc.)
