Hi all!
I'm still planning my Interrail, and I was thinking if it could be possible to do something like this: arrive in a city in the morning from a night train -> visit the city with your backpack on -> leave in the evening in a night train to a new destination -> repeat.
Is it too much of a strain on your back? I'm not very tall or well built, but doing this would enable me to get to know a lot more places than if I would spend most of my nights on hostels. Do you know if all the big capital train stations have lockers that travelers can use (and at what cost)?

Hi.
It is possible to do it the way you said - but after some days it will be hard. Think about a mix of hostels and night trains.
Lockers are available in most European train stations - usually you will have to pay for 24hours (even if you only use them for 2hours) - average price is 3-4 EUR (depends on the size).
Night trains (at least the seated wagons and the cheaper couchettes) do not have showers. In big stations there are often public showers for which you will have to pay extra.
Hostels are good if you want to meet other travelers. Just stay in a cheap big dorm. Most of the hostels have lockers.

Thanks for the help Peter, the hostel/night train mix looks like a good idea!

Putting your stuff in a locker when arriving in a city from a night train is a valid option - we have done so for example in Kobenhavn, Stockholm, Trondheim, Bergen and Amsterdam this year. Usually you can fit two large backpacks in one locker so that it becomes relatively cheap (prices range from ~3€ to ~7€ in my experience.
It is much (!) more fun to explore a city without having your luggage with you - especially if you dont have much time anyway. ;)
I've visited several (smaller) cities with the backpack (in most cases when we have to wait for a train) and it isnt much fun I can tell you.
