The Eurostar is with Interrail, if your ticket includes zone A and/or zone E, travelable for a special tariff. A pricelist on eurostar says it'll cost €75,- for a single travel from Lille (Rijsel) France to Ashford/London. It might be cheaper to take a ferry from Holland or France to the UK. You'll get 50% reduction. The line Hook of Holland - Harwich (Stena Line) costs about €22,- for a single travel.

The ferry from Calais to Dover is about EUR 10 one way.
It is much cheaper and more of adventure !

A single travel with P&O will cost you normally £ 18.12 (€ 26,49). With Interrail it'll cost (-30%) € 18,54.

With www.seafrance.com you have a reduction of 50% to the normal fare.

Seafrance fare Dover-Calais: EUR 14.00 (one-way).

how much in advanced do i need to book the ticket for the ferry, and where can i buy it?
also, how do i get from the train station in calais to the harbour??

there you have photos and a perfect description about how to get to the harbour.
you do not need to book your ticket in advance, just go to the ferry terminal. you will always get a seat !!! I talked a lot with the staff of the ticket office there and they confirmed me that on the ferry you will always get a seat as foot passenger! :)

Is there something that can impede me to catch the train departing from Calais at 15:29 if my ferry from Dover arrives at 14:55? I prefer to walk to the station.

As far as I know there are only services Zeebrugge - Hull/Rosyth. They are operated by P&O but I guess you wont get an InterRail discount on these routes.
The SeaFrance operated Calais - Dover ferry is by far the best (and cheapest) way to travel to GB/Ireland with InterRail. :)

Indeed, I eventually find the fares for this company and that's amazing.. the difference with SeaFrance ! It can't be only due to the length...

or the one from Hoek van Holland to Harwich ... but it is a bit more expensive. you can also use it for overnight travels. Calais-Dover is definitely the cheapest one like Flow said. :)

Hi everyone,

Unfortunately I've seen on railcc that Seafrance stopped the transport of foot passengers in November 2009.
So the InterRail discounted connection got lost.
It also says You have to buy a RETURN-ticket for the same day. The fare is then between EUR 12-16....
Do you know if I have to make a reservation for that? I do not need a return ticket for the same day,... but if that is the cheapest option then it's okay. So it would be about 32 Euros all in all (I'll stay in England for about 7-10 days). Can anyone confirm that?

Hi.

Yes I can confirm that. One way (booked as RETURN ticket) is about EUR 16. Depends at what time you travel.
I recommend you to buy it one day in advance online.

Although I have no idea why they sell it like that, 16 Euros are still okay compared with the Eurostar :)

Maybe I'll buy the tickets directly in Calais (one day in advance).

Hi,

We wanted to buy our ferry tickets online (at P&0 Ferries) and the return tickets where 12 £ per Person... which was no problem and we were happy that it is not more. However, then it said, Please note: Day return tickets are only valid when used as part of an outward and return journey. [b]Failure to complete both legs of the booking will invoke a surcharge in accordance with our terms of business[/b]. :| So, I guess we have to buy the one-way ticket for 30 £ per Person... or do you know if there is another possibility? Thank you!

Hm... P&O Ferry seems to be the only one that takes foot passengers and is, although it's 78€ for 2 (one-way), the cheapest option... Or does someone need a return ticket on the 14th of July (Dover - Calais)? --- if it is transferable at all...

I wanna travel from UK to FR

So am I correct by saying that I can just go to Dover and tell them at the counter that I am returning back to france right now ( so I came with that ferry same day earlier) and they sell me the ticket for 18 euros ?

Or I tell them I want to get a back-n-forth ticket pretending to come back to dover later that day and than its 16euro ?



Why is it cheaper to return the same day ?

The situation is currently a bit confusing. There are the tickets you mentioned, others just hitch-hiked, others got an InterRail discount which is official not available anymore.
I will check it next week and update it.

-maybe. Of course anyone can always ask-but I tried to do same some years ago, and they looked at me, frowned, and said this was for DAYtrips only and ONLY for people with no luggage! (there was a strike going on then).
-as said-these are very cheap DAY-shopping trips-the ferries hope to earn by selling taxfree-but not profitfree items on board. same -same as in the UK many cheap dayreturns (but then only for nonpeak-travels) are a lot cheaper as full-fare return or even full-fare single.
