Hi there,

I have timetables coming out of my ears! Since I am at the moment interailing - but am having to cut it short due to personal reasons. Therefore I am trying to fit in as much as possible.

I have to arrive at Cherbourg by TGV from Paris to catch the Ferry on Thursday 9th September.

I am going to Prague on the night train from Krakow - but then want to see Wien - Some of italy (so perhaps Milan) - the really key thing is that I get back to Paris for Wednesday where I will stay at a hostel.

I have looked at fares and things... was thinking night train from Praha to Wien Sunday night and then stay in Wein one night - and take a day train through to italy to see the alps Monday - and then shoot back to Paris somehow.

Can anyone see through my panicked fog and simplify this for me!

A panicked traveller... who should be enjoying his holiday rather than spending time in an internet cafe!

Alternative suggested routes I am all ears - my decision to go to praha seems to have been a mistake since it is not so well connected as I thought - but I have booked the ticket now - tisk!

kind regards
Paul

Hi Paul!

First, let's start with your way back home and get you a good connection from Paris to Cherbourg. I dont know which ferry you're gonna take but as far as I know the first departure is at 1115 so your first train would be this:

Paris St Lazare 0707 - 1009 Cherbourg

Later connections would be:

Paris St Lazare 0845 - 1059 Caen
Caen 1107 - 1223 Cherbourg

Paris St Lazare 1010 - 1317 Cherbourg

Paris St Lazare 1210 - 1516 Cherbourg

All these connections are free with InterRail - no TGV! :)

Then, Praha - Wien: You can use this night train without reservation (in 2nd class seats) but if you want, you could get a reservation which would guarantee you a seat.

Wien - Italy: That's a little tricky, especially if you want to see the (Austrian) alps. There is no direct day train from Vienna to Italy. If you want to go during the day, have look here: https://rail.cc/en/klagenfurt-villach-venezia-bus/f3910
Simplest way of getting to Italy from Vienna would be the direct night train (couchettes and sleeper only!): https://rail.cc/en/vienna-rome-milan-night-train/f1417 An alternative would be the direct night train to Venice and to change there to a train to Milano: https://rail.cc/en/vienna-venice-night-train/f3671

A quite nice day time alternative with no need for reservations would be:

Wien West 0944 - 1452 Innsbruck
Innsbruck 1527 - 2103 Milano Lambrate/2115 Milano Porta Garibaldi

From Milano to Paris, fastest connections are the direct TGV services (compulsory reservation!):

Milano Centrale 0640/1610 - 1356/2321 Paris Lyon

There are alternative connections via Switzerland which include some very scenic parts through the Alps (even more than the direct trains) but then you'd have to pay for reservation at least twice.

Hope this helps you a little. :)
