Hello everyone,
well you can say atleast, i dont know how to get home...
I'm currently in Istanbul and want to get to Igouemenitsa or Patras to catch a ferry to Bari. The Problem is the money. I mean if i look into the threads here, the journey would cost me 3x what I paid for my journey from Germany to Istanbul.
Im going on Friday. The train departures here to Thessaloniki at 08:30pm and arrives in Thessaloniki at 09:30am on Saturday.
But it looks like this train has only sleepers and no couchettes, so it costs me alone about 30€. Then from Thessaloniki to Athens the train departures at 12:42pm (no IC so no supplements, its the train # 501). and arrives in athens at 06:18pm.
So this costs me now 30€ to get to Athens and it looks like there is no train connection to patras on the same day. Also there is just one ferry, that goes at 06:00pm, so i cant catch that one. so i might have to stay a night at athens trainstation.
But just to sum it upü, ferry (30€) + journey (istanbul-patras) 40€ = 70€. I mean for what the fuck of sake i have an interrail pass and paid 300€... I have a spare budget of 90€ and I need to get home from bari to germany haha.
anyone can recommend me regional trains from istanbul to athens or something like that...

Hi.
If you want to save money, you will have to travel Istanbul - Belgrade - Germany.
I know it is sometimes sad with the supplements. But these decisions are made by the national railway companies. :o
Using a night trains saves you as well the costs for a hostel as you have a bed in the train.
From Thessaloniki think about using a bus to Igouemenitsa and from there the ferry if you like.
The bus is about EUR 25: https://rail.cc/en/igoumenitsa-istanbul/f4460

Well. I think I found the cheapest possibility.
Fr. 27.08 - Istanbul Sirkeci (20:30)
Sa. 28.08 - Thessaloniki (09:33)
--> sleeper (~30€, will ask tomorrow at the station)
Sa. 28.08 - Thessaloniki (12:42)
Sa. 28.08 - Athens (18:18)
--> (train no. 501) no supplement as it is no IC/ICE
Sa. 28.08 - Athens (23:06)
So. 29.08 - Kiaton (00:27)
--> (train no. 4336) no supplement as it is no IC/ICE
So. 29.08 - Kiaton (07:37)
So. 29.08 - Patras (09:31)
--> (train no. 20) no supplement as it is no IC/ICE
So all in all that costs me 30€ and then I have to add ~30€ for the ferry. So 60€ is a good prize remembering that it would cost nearly 100€ from Igouemenitsa instead of Patras.
Wish me a good trip and I hope it works all out and those 7 hours at the train station in kiaton i will pass without getting robbed or killed ;]

Hi.
Kiaton... if I remember right ... there should be some green nature around - if walking a bit from the station in direction away from the sea.
But definitely better than staying overnight somewhere in Patras - what I do not recommend.
From Igouemenitsa to Italy should be the same like starting from Patras, using Superfast Ferries / Blue Star Ferries or Minoan ferries:

Have a good trip, Peter :)

Actually the ferry costs the same yes but look:
train ticket (istanbul-thessaloniki) -> 30€
bus ticket (thessaloniki - igouemenitsa) -> 26€
ferry ticket (ig. - bari/ancona) -> ~30€
= 86€
I save those 26€ with the travel to patras even if it takes a lot of time, but the title says im tight on budget.
