I am at the early stages of planning a trip in December this year. The main aim is to start in Germany (at one of the Christmas markets) and to see some of Poland (as my husbands family are from there). After that we just figured we would go to places that look interesting! Does the above route look reasonable for a 2 week trip? We have been told that most of the places listed can be explored to some extent in one day.
We were thinking about maybe finishing in Athens or Ljubijana but maybe that is a bit too far?
I guess the main question is whether or not the sleeper trains run at that time of year? Looking at the sleeper train country specific posts it would seem that some of them may not run in the winter?

Hi.
Think about a route like the following one. Keep in mind: traveling within the Christmas holiday and around new years is peak travel time.
You will have to reserve night trains early. It should be possible to get most of them in Munich main station (München Hbf). If they aren't available any more, you are at least prepared to use a day train.
Fly to Munich.
Munich - Nürnberg (Nuremberg) with an amazing Christmas market.
Nürnberg - Prague by direct day train: it is a travel beside the high speed tracks in really nice natur with a lot of snow.
Prague - Krakow: day or night train
Krakow - Vienna: day or night train
Vienna - Budapest: direct day train
Budapest - Bucharest: day or night train
Bucharest - Belgrade - Ljubljana: day + night train.
Or: Bucharest - Thessaloniki - Athens: night train
For both the travel time is about 24 hours.
Simply use the schedule planer: if the train doesn't run in October or November, it normally won't run as well in December.
But the night trains which you could use should all be available around Christmas.
