I'll be trying to get on this in mid July from La tour de Carol. When I get to Villefranche-de-confient it appears I can go from there to at least Perpignan but Mike Ball in his 2020-21 atlas shows the line as "expected to re-open". Has it?

Yes I'm aware of the schedule (I asked Little Trains operator) but my query is if I can get to EG Perpignan from Villefranche-de-confient preferably by rail. I assume there's a bus? I don't want to be stuck at Villefranche-de-confient.

I see trains between Villefranche-Vernet-les-bains (10 min walk from Confient) to Perpignan at www.sncf.com but only a few per day on normal (e,g, not striking) days.

OK thanks I'll try that suggestion of Villefranche-Vernet-les-bains as a departure point.

I've also asked Trainline why everytime I put Figueres (Spain) as a destination they want to only give me TGV options to Figueres-Vilafant. I want Figueres with a view to getting from there to L'Escala not the 60+ euro price for a 24 minute ride from Perpignan. Does anyone know if I can avoid the TGV line?

Try Perpignan - Port Bou at SNCF and Port Bou -Figueres at RENFE separately.

Schedules Villefranche - Perpignan and Perpignan - Cerbere/Portbou: https://www.ter.sncf.com/occitanie
Schedules Portbou - Figueres: https://rodalies.gencat.cat/es/inici/
Trainline is for booking tickets (and only for those they can sell) and not for searching schedules (because they dont have them all).

Thanks both of you. I'll look at your suggestions tomorrow as it's late night in AU.
