Hi,
Me and my girlfriend leave on Monday for our first interrail trip. I have just been doing some last minute research and came across a website which said that we have to hand over our passports to the tickets inspector on entry to over night trains so that when it comes to border cross we dont have to be woken up.
I was just wondering if anyone could confirm this information as we dont want to be handing over our passports unnecessarily.
Thanks for the help

This can happen on some night trains, they do it so you dont have to wake up in the middle of the night when you cross borders. Just go with the flow, the inspector should have some id, and should be asking for everyones passport, not just yours...

This usually happens when you have booked a bed and they also take your ticket and/or interrail card.
If you go with the flow just SiDUDe suggested won't face any problems, besides all inspectors have something to identify them.
Enjoy! 8)

Hello together,
I have the same concern as simonandbecke. We are starting with our trip tomorrow and I'd like to get some last minute information.
So if we hop an a night train, we have to hand over our pass and/or auch interrail ticket to the inspector. I wondered if it the inspector would accept a copy of my Passport, so that I dont't habe tot hand over the original.
Does anybody have expieriences with handing over copied documents? Does ist work, especially in eastern europe (Bosnia, Serbia, Romania, Hungary,...)?
Many thanks for yours answers!

Hi!
I dont have any experience with copied ID documents - I think the conductor wouldnt mind, but I guess it could be a problem with border police.
Like others have said before, the conductor who collects the tickets/documents has to be able to identify himself and if he collects the documents of everybody there wont be a problem with fraud etc... :)
