Vienna - Prague - Munich - Amsterdam
Ok so this is the route I am soon to set off on, we have the 10 days in 22 tickets
The two main bones of contention for our group is where are we going to face supplement. We are all happy to add an hour or two or leave earlier to avoid supplements if we can. We are also worried about quotas so if anybody could give us tips on what to do that would be awesome.
1. Barcelona - Marseille
This seems like we go to Montpellier and get charged eitehr 6.50 or 18.50 suppplement. And then we get a regional train from Montpellier to Marseille for free? Is this true? Is this the best way
2. Marseille - Milan
Not a clue, really confused by this part. We imagine this and trip 3 to be the horrors of our journey. What are the cheapest ways to do it? Rail Europe wants to send us to Lyon then Duon Ville. But I read on here about a nice service involving regional trains but got confused.
3. Milan - Vienna
This one I'm not sure what to do, we saw Milan more of a stopping point so we were hoping to get on pretty early from here. But are happy to do whatever we can to keep the costs down here.
4. Vienna - Prague
Looks simple journey with a €7 charge that doesn't look avoidable, but it looks easy
5. Prague - Munich
Looks free from all I can see, does this mean I can just jump on?
6. Munich - Amsterdam
Free again I believe? so just another jump on?
So as you can see it gets easier.
But the 2nd and 3rd parts look confusing.
Cheers Matt

Hi Matt.
The Barcelona to Marseilles part is always a really sad one. Not really long distances, but not good to travel by train.
You have different options.
One is via the Pyrenees with an extra over night stop in Perpignan (amazing nature and a free to use roller coaster train - no supplements at all!):
https://rail.cc/blog/little-yellow-train-video/
Next day from Perpignan to Marseilles (there are some connections without any supplements!). Example:
Perpignan Dep: 1027 | Regional train - free of supplements
Avignon Centre Arr: 1328
Avignon Centre Dep: 1550 | Regional train - free of supplements
Marseille-St-Charles Arr: 1709
The direct one Barcelona - Marseilles, I just updated the topic with a new connection free of supplements:
https://rail.cc/en/train/marseille-to-nice
Marseilles to Milan is easy to do with free trains - in Italy always avoid the expensive Eurostar Italia trains (supplement EUR 10), use the free IC trains. A reservations is possible for EUR 3, but not required.
https://rail.cc/en/train/marseille-to-milan
Milan to Vienna: nice by day train as for the amazing Alps - or by IC train to Venice and from there by night train to Vienna:
https://rail.cc/en/venice-vienna-night-train/f3672
You should be able to book this train online:
https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation
Example:
Milano Lambrate Dep: 0710 | EC train - should be free - if supplement, then a max of EUR 5
Innsbruck Hbf Arr: 1232
Innsbruck Hbf Dep: 1354 | OEC train - free of supplements
Wien Westbahnhof Arr: 1840
Vienna to Prague: free like you found out if you avoid these special trains.
Prague to Munich: https://rail.cc/en/prague-munich-train/f5109
Munich to Amsterdam: free by German ICE/IC trains - simply never use the THALYS train in the Netherlands.
Also possible by direct night train - cheap and you save the hostel:

I hope this information will help you. You see: you can travel your whole trip without any reservations or supplements! :)

I'm sorry to say I have already booked, but if this goes well I will probably do Eastern Europe properly next summer with it. And I will remember this place, will also send any of my friends via that website if they get inspired by this trip.
All the Info looks really useful thanks.
Cheers Matt
