Dubrovnik-Split-Zagreb-Ljubljana-Bled-Budapest-Krakow-Prague-Berlin-Paris

Hi!

A few friends and I are flying out to Dubrovnik on the 4th of August, staying there for a few days, getting the ferry to Split and then starting our pass on the 8th. Our dates work out as:

4th - 7th: Dubrovnik (3 nights)
7th: Ferry to Split
8th: Stay in Split for the day (2 nights)
9th: Travel to Zagreb (1 night)
10th: Travel to Ljubljana (1 night)
11th: Ljubljana
12th: Travel to Bled
13th: Take the Bled-Ljubljana-Budapest train.
14th: Arrive in Budapest, stay all day 14th & 15th
15th: Take night train from Budapest to Krakow
16th-19th: Krakow, night train on the 19th to Prague
20th-22nd: Prague, night train on 22nd to Berlin
23rd-26th: Berlin, night train on the 26th to Paris
27th-30th: Paris
30th: Home!!

What I'm wondering, is this route do-able? Budapest has been a last minute addition - will we get to see enough of it if we're only there for two days? And does three days suffice for Krakow, Prague and Berlin a piece? Or would we be better to cut out Ljubljana and Bled and go straight to Budapest from Zagreb?

Advice is sorely needed! :)

Also, how many supplements do we need to pay? One for each night train?

We're traveling on the 10 days in 22 pass and by my reckoning we are only using nine of our ten days. Is that correct or have I made a glaring error?

I'd very much appreciate some help!

Thanks!

J

That looks like a great trip! I wouldnt miss out Bled or Ljubljana as there awesome. Just make sure you understand the 1900 rule and check the forum for suppliments and you will have no problems

Thanks! A lot of planning went into it! :)

I'm looking up the night trains now - is it only trains that leave after 1900 and arrive after 0400 without any train changes that count for the rule?

It has to be a night train which is a bit of a loose definition, but if the train number is Nxxx or CNLxxx or something you are good, or if is obviosly a night train (with sleepers/couchettes). It has to leave after 1900 (except the paris-italy sleepers...) but I dont think there is any limit as to when it arrives. Im pretty sure, for example, you could get on a night train at 1900, get off at 0300 and get on a normal train and it would only count as one day. You couldnt however, get on at 1900, get off at 2300 and get on another train. That would count as 2 days.

Okay great, I've looked up all the night trains and they are all direct and all leave after 1900 and arrive the next morning. Most of them start with EN.

One last question: can we pay the suppliments on the day or do we need to sort that in advance? We'll be going for the six couchette compartments. Would it be okay to turn up at the train station on the evening and book a compartment together?

Thanks for being so helpful!

How many of you are there? You should be OK in eastern europe, especially if you avoid friday/sunday nights. I book my tickets out of a city as soon as I arrive, so I am always able to book a couple of nights ahead

There are five of us until Krakow, and then eight.

I think what we might do is when we arrive in each train station, we'll just make the reservation then, so at least we'll have booked a couple of days in advance! :)
