So this is our big trip plan:
Paris - Bruges - Amsterdam - Berlin - Prague - Vienna - Munich -(overnight) Rome - Florence - Venice (overnight) - Barcelona
I have been looking for ways to avoid supplements wherever I can. I know to avoid the Thalys train in France, and to go to Bruges via Lille Flandres. I know that I can't really avoid supplements travelling through Italy, but the rest of my journey I shouldn't have to pay extra, apart from Munich - Rome. (Please correct me if I'm wrong here.) These are the main points I am wondering about:
I have enough time to go one more place. I am thinking, somewhere between Venice and Barcelona. The choices would be somewhere in Switzerland, say Bern or Zurich, or somewhere in the south of France, maybe Nice or Marseilles. Which of these would be the cheapest/quickest, or would it be better to try to go straight from Venice to Barcelona in one night (via Milan) and add in extra days to the places I have?
Is it viable to go to Cologne on the way from Amsterdam to Berlin, and would I have to pay any supplements on this line?
Are the supplements in Spain on every train, like in Italy?
Thanks.

Hi.
Concerning supplements always do it this way:
1) Check the schedule planer: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route
2) Compare it to the supplements section: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation
3) Check the country topics at our forum: https://rail.cc/en/countries
Paris - Bruges: like you said, avoid using the expensive THALYS trains - you can travel it by free trains (here an example to Bruxelles):
https://rail.cc/en/paris-brussels-bruxelles-train/f3992
An example to Bruges (there ar more connections of course available, but this one is free of supplements):
Paris Nord dep: 0907 | free Regional train
Amiens arr: 1029
Amiens dep: 11:00 | free Regional train
Lille Flandres arr: 13:00
Lille Flandres dep: 13:05 | free Regional train
Brugge arr: 14:27
Bruges - Amsterdam: the same, avoid the THALYS train. An example of a free connection:
Brugge dep: 09:19 | free IC train
Antwerpen Centraal arr: 10:44
Antwerpen Centraal dep: 11:00 | free IC train
Amsterdam Centraal arr: 13:06
Amsterdam - Berlin: possible by free trains or night train
https://rail.cc/en/amsterdam-berlin-train/f2346
A stop is worth in Cologne, especially for the evening with a lot of pubs.
Berlin - Prague: free of supplements
https://rail.cc/en/berlin-prague-train/f3361
Prague-Vienna: https://rail.cc/en/train/prague-to-vienna
Vienna-Munich: free by direct day trains (ICE, Railjet, ...)
Munich-Rome: in Italy try to get free IC trains (slower) instead of the expensive Eurostar Italia trains. Use hte schedule planer mentioned above.
Direct night train: https://rail.cc/en/munich-rome-night-train/f2872
For train connections in Italy check the country topic: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route
Italy to Barcelona:
The direct night train is fast and you save a lot of time, but expensive.
A nice stop is Nice in between. Zürich and Bern are both very nice as well. But I recommend Nice as it is a more direct route.
If you like, add the Petit Train Jaune in the Pyrenees - definitely worth:
https://rail.cc/en/milan-barcelona-night-train/f1168
https://rail.cc/en/paris-pyrenees-barcelona-le-petit-tain-jaune/f4023
https://rail.cc/en/petit-train-jaune-latour-de-carol/f1343
And think about adding Krakow in Poland in between Prague and Vienna or Budapest.
Have a sunny trip and if you want to support our work, buy your official InterRail Pass at

Thank you, Peter :)

Hi!
Prag - Wien shouldnt be a supplement! Except for the SC 73, Praha dep 0639 and the overnight train EN 477/407, Praha dep 0037 - but friends of mine were travelling with that train last week without having to pay a reservation.
