Hi this is my first time posting.I am male 56 and am hoping to go interrailing this september.I took my first interrail trip last year to Paris,Munich,Vienna,Venice,Florence,Assisi and Rome, last year and enjoyed it altough I did find the heat hot :D (in Ireland we dont get too hot weather) Anyway,I got the interrail bug and am as I say planning to head off again this September.
My rough plan would be either fly to Lisbon, saville,Granada,Barcalona,Rome, south Italy, ferry to Dubrovnic,Budapest, Prague,Munich and fly home.Or else begin in Rome and then go on to south of Italy,Dubrovnic etc.
I am planning to take about a 3 week trip and I would like some feedback and suggestions please.I am open to changing or modifing.Thank you from Roamingpaddy

Hi Roamingpaddy.

And currently it is very hot again, at least in Germany with nearly every day something about 35C - but mid/end September is as well my preferred time to travel as the trains aren't full any more and it is easy to get a supplement/reservation if needed. :)

Important to know:
In Spain nearly every train need a supplement: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation/spain/es
Train scheduleshttps://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route

Special country connections and night train information: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train
How to buy supplements if needed: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation

I recommend you to start in Lisbon (a beautiful city with a lot of cheap and definitely good hostels: [ux]https://rail.shop/hostelworld[/ux] ).

If you want to continue to Sevilla, you either have to do it by using the night train Lisbon-Madrid (at least for a part) and then continue to the South:
https://rail.cc/en/train/lisbon-to-madrid

A cheaper solution - and as well more interesting is to go down by train to the Algarve and cross the border to Spain by bus (as the rail networks are not connected in the South between Portugal and Spain):
https://rail.cc/en/portugal-spain-algarve-train-bus/f1435

From there you continue to the places you want to see in Spain, up to Barcelona.

Barcelona to Rome is a long trip. There is only one (but expensive) night train going the direct way Barcelona - Milano. I recommend to buy the reservation for this train already some days in advance at a station in Spain.
https://rail.cc/en/train/barcelona-to-milan

If you have to time, add the Petit Train Jaune to the trip Barcelona - Italy: it is one of the most amazing rail connections within Europe - and free to use with Interrail: https://rail.cc/blog/little-yellow-train-video/

If you want to save money, you have to do the trip Barcelona - Italy in two steps with a stop in Nice. But you will loose a lot of time - and the same time spent money for hostels - so in total: the night train is expensive, but okay.

For Italy check the country topic where you will find a lot of connections: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route
Always pay attention as you will have to pay supplements for the Eurostar Italia trains (EUR 10) - just use the slower IC trains which are free (reservation EUR 3 if you like but not needed) - but I think you know it from your last InterRail trip:
https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation/italy/it

Using night trains in Italy I recommend couchettes or sleepers where you can lock the doors.

Italy to Croatia is possible by ferry: https://rail.cc/en/ferry-italy-croatia/f2338

If you want to do it by train, travel Venice - Ljubljana - Zagreb:
https://rail.cc/en/venice-ljubljana-train/f3664
https://rail.cc/en/ljubljana-zagreb-train/f4001

Croatia country topic: https://rail.cc/en/forum-croatia-train-travel

From Split or Zagreb to Budapest it is no problem, you can use day or night trains. The same for your trip to Prague.
Just check the country topics and train schedules mentioned at the top of the topic.

Prague to Munich is possible by supplement free trains - either the direct ones - or via Nürnberg (definitely worth a stop for the amazing castle).
Do not use the bus as you have to pay for it a supplement.

If you have the time, you can add Krakow in Poland (Auschwitz is close) in between Budapest and Prague - also worth to see! :)

I hope this information will help you planing your trip. And if you like our work, support it and buy your official InterRail pass at:

Thank you... Peter :)
