Hi All,

New to this board, but I'm a frequent contributor to other boards like this, so thanks in advance!

Had some extra FF miles to burn, so we're headed into Italy and out of Madrid in October. We arrive Rome on a Tuesday early AM and leave from Madrid the following week on Friday AM. Trip is my wife (33) and myself (36). Leaving the kids at home for this one.

After college, I backpacked through Europe a bit, but am fortunate to be able to splurge a little more on this trip (no dirty hostels this time!). I remember how much I loved Florence, and would love to go back. (Really liked how I could immerse myself in the culture there.)

Figuring we have to do the obligatory couple days in Rome since DW hasn't been there yet. I have no experience with Southern France or Spain, but we love wine, eating GREAT food, doing the unexpected, experiencing some of the finer things to splurge on, and having fun. Barcelona is a must...other than that, looking for any ideas.

Best to all!
Brett

Hi Brett.

In Italy you are very flexible - there are as well the super fast Eurostar Italia trains (with a rail pass supplement of EUR 10).
So you can order the cities in the way you want to have it.

Just use the schedule planer: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route

And always compare it to the supplements: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation

The country topics are very helpful as well concerning special train connections and night trains:
https://rail.cc/en/countries

Southern France is worth to have a stop in Nice - from there day trips to Cannes, Monaco, etc (or just have stops on your way coming from Italy).

Next step is Barcelona.

If you have the time, you can cross the Pyrenees by the Petit Train Jaune instead traveling along the coast.
Nice - Perpignan - Villefranche - Petit Train Jaune - Barcelona
More information here: https://rail.cc/en/paris-pyrenees-barcelona-le-petit-tain-jaune/f4023
It is an amazing nature!

In Spain you also have to pay attention to train supplements (max. EUR 10 for high speed trains).

For reservations read this topic:

I hope this will help you planing your trip. And October is a good time for such a travel as the trains aren't as full like in the summer months.
If you want to support our work here at the forum, buy your official InterRail pass at [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux] or if you need an Eurail pass at [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux]

Thank you and have a sunny trip, Peter :)
