Hey guys,
I've searched through these forums and found a lot of interesting, helpful information. However, it seems to be really complex and, the most important thing, I guess, is to get advices by people who have the skills or experience with this! Therefore I would like to ask you for your help, I would really appreciate it!
My brother (19) and me (21) plan to make a short Western-Europe travel with the Interrail Global Pass for Youth (5 days travel, 10 days validity.
We want to start aroung August, 3rd this year, here our brief planning:
3. August 2010 Amsterdam Arrival:15:00
4. August 2010 Amsterdam
5. August 2010 Amsterdam
6. August 2010 London Arrival: 8:00 (therefore a overnight travel from 5. Aug. to 6. Aug.)
7. August 2010 London / Paris Arrival: ??? (we plan to start travel from London to Paris very late, we aren't sure, if it would be better to arrive in Paris late on 7. Aug or better on early morning on 8. Aug.)
8. August 2010 Paris
9. August 2010 Paris
We want to do this all as cheap as possible, so travel with trains (such as eurostar) is not possible for us. I found out, that ferry would then be the best option, however, the websites are mostly (http://www.stenaline.nl) in netherlands language.
What would you advice us to use as travel way, especially from Amsterdam to London, and from there later to Paris?
We plan to stay overnight in the cities in hostels, a good site for this seems to be http://www.hihostels.com/. Does anyone have another great idea for cheap (and good) overnight stay possibilties or search sites for those?

Thank you very much in advance!

Greetings from germany,

Felix

Hallo Felix.

Amsterdam - London overnight is the best to do by ferry:
https://rail.cc/en/amsterdam-london-train/f3990
https://rail.cc/en/ferry-netherlands-england/f1659

You will find cheaper and more hostels in London than in Paris - so maybe stay one more night in London before you leave to Paris.
A good hostel website which I recommend is the one of [ux]https://rail.shop/hostelworld[/ux]

London - Paris is a bit tricky at the moment - as we don't know the exact fare using the ferry. If you buy by cash a return ticket, you should get it for about EUR 16 - instead using the expensive Eurostar train. Read these links:
https://rail.cc/en/ferry-london-paris-england-france/f1222 (red the full post!)
https://rail.cc/en/london-paris-eurostar-train/f1805

In Paris I can recommend you the St. Christophers - but it is often booked out.

I hope this will help you planing your trip.
Viel Spaß, Peter :)

Hi Peter,
danke für deine Antwort!

I have a question regarding the travel via ferry, from Amsterdam to London. Should we use now the one from this thread (https://rail.cc/en/amsterdam-london-train/f3990) P&O Ferries or this one (https://rail.cc/en/ferry-netherlands-england/f1659) StenaLine?
A little bit confusing, why these two ferries are not mentioned in both threads.. I see, that when traveling either from Paris or Amsterdam to London, you have to do this (when using a ferry) via Calais and Dover. However, I'm a little bit confused, which ferry we should use... Would you please help me?

Thanks in advance,

und viele Grüße aus Mannheim,

Felix

Hi Felix.
So we can talk in real as well. I just live 30kms away from Mannheim. ;)

The ferry Calais-Dover is better for travels in between Paris and London and return.
The ferry Hoek van Holland to Harwich is better for the Benelux countries to England as you will save a lot of travel time AND you can use it for an overnight travel and save at the same time the hostel.

I recommend you for Amsterdam - England the one starting from Hoek.
And for London-Paris the one via Dover-Calais.

Peter :)
