What it says on the tin. Is it worth going all the way to Zakopane? It looks really nice, but is there enough to do there to warrant going all that way south, when it isn't exactly a travel hub

Well, it's rather overcrowded tourist city, very popular destination.
there are some rather small museums, a lot of bars and restaurants.

When I'm going to Zakopane - is not to visit city but to go to the Tatra Mountains.
In such situation you can use Zakopane as travel hub.

During summer Tatra Mountains will be overcrowded as well, but it's worth to visit them, and you can sleep in the mountains not in Zakopane. But remember to take sleeping bag, because it may be hard to find free places in the rooms. In such case you would be able to sleep on the ground (but you still need to pay for it..)
It's also worth to visit Slovak part of Tatra Mountain. You can visit them even from Zakopane (e.g. Dolina Białej Wody Bielovodska Dolina) just cross the border at Lysa Polana )(you can go there by any bus to Morskie Oko - Palenica Bialczanska). This valey is really loooong, can be boring for someone;) Or take a bus from Zakopane to Tatranska Lomnica and take Cable Car for Łomnica (the highest peak in Tatra accessible by cable car) (reservation recommended).

You can also look for place to sleep when you cross the border, in Slovakia (Tatranska Lomnica, Stary Smokovec etc).
then you can continue you inter Rail journey from Slovakia, as this places are accessible by train.

From Zakapane you can also find trips to the raft trip on the Dunajec River.

Thanks for your help.

It was because I was wondering whether it was better to get to the Tatras through Poland via Zakopane, or to go through Slovakia up to Poprad and then on.

do not bother taking a train from Krakow there-only think of an overnight (run ONLY during the main season now!) from elsewhere in Pl. BUSes Krakow-Zak run ev 30 mins or more often and cost just 10 PLN/ride and take 2 hrs-train is nearly 4. You can-with some adventure (which seems to be lacking by all those people thinking each bus they take must be on www) hop over border toward Slovakia easy from Zak-minibus to Slovak border (granizsa)-walk over-and then hourly local SAD bus to Poprad via Stary Smokovec. have some cash euro ready to pay that bus.

Where is the meaning in answering a post almost a year later?
Why recommend someone travelling with an InterRail pass to take a bus?

I dont get it...
