Hi all
First of all - I don't think I mentioned this in my other posts - a VERY BIG THANK YOU to the organisers of this forum; the country boards, in particular, are a godsend. The only thing required is a big mindmap connection of all the night train routes!
Now, my question:
I'm planning a rather big Interrail trip for the end of August, starting from Venice and heading out across central Europe, spending nights on trains for speed and convenience.
We land in Pisa on the first day, sleep there, head to Venice the next day, then the adventure starts.
However, since it's Summer, I'm worried that reserving the couchettes at the station might be too late. What's the expert opinion on this?
Furthermore - in Venice/Pisa, can I use automated machines to make my couchette reservations with IR for all of Europe? (e.g.: can I book a Budapest -> Belgrade couchette, or an Amsterdam -> Copenhagen one from there? If not, will a teller do this for me at no extra charge?)
Thank you!
PS: There should be a board where people can discuss their past experience of Interrail, show photos, talk about routes they did, etc!

Hi.
Thanks that you like the board - it is a lot of work we have here, so good to hear this. :)
With the new version of the website which will be soon available, you will have this option of discussions about experiences. :)
At the machines in Italy you can only reserve tickets for night trains starting in Italy. For others you have to go to a ticket window.
You can already make the reservations for Italian trains online and just pick up the ticket at a machine - much easier.

Oh okay - I didn't know I could pick them up at the ticket station! That's great.
When I go to the ticket window, will I be able to buy supplements for all my Europe trains? I've heard that you can't book most East European trains/there are extra charges.. is that true?

That's right.
Western European night trains shouldn't be a problem. For Eastern it often depends at the staff at the station if they are willing to try it... But I always got it till Bulgaria - so deep in the East. ;)
I bought them always in Germany.
But never had problems getting reservations then directly at stations in Eastern Europe for the night trains booking one day before departure.
