Hiya,

I last interrailed 20 years ago and I am doing it again this Summer with my 3 kids.

When I did it last some trains had compartments with seats that had a handle underneath that you could pull and they would completely recline, when all 6 seats were pulled down it made a big 'bed' that was really comfy.

Do these seats still exist? If so what are they called?

Also, has anyone got any tips for interrailing with kids? Mine are 15, 12 and 8.

Thanks Sandra

Hi Sandra!

These kind of seats still exist in certain countries. You will find them mostly in Austria, maybe still some in Italy and Germany as well as in some Eastern Europe countries. There is no special name for these compartments (at least you cant find them in the schedules...). ;)

Humm...travelling with kids. I dont know if you have been on a train holiday with your kids yet, but think of preparing some deck of cards etc for them to play during longer trips.
Certain railways offer dedicated children/family rooms or areas in their trains where you will sometimes even find a TV with movies, games etc. Some I can think of:
- ÖBB: Railjet has a small family area in coach 7, some other trains offer KinderKino (a compartment with TV for children) as well
- SNCF: TGV (and Téoz I think as well) have dedicated family areas which, in newer/refurbishes units, also contain a small desk with a board game on it.
- SBB: Family compartments on long distance trains
