Hi,
Myself and five of my friends are thinking of taking an interailing trip in eastern europe in september starting off in istanbull travelling onto sofia then onto beograd onto budapest then onto bradislava and finishing up in praha. do you think this is possible to do in 14 days? If not which of these destination would you cut? Also in relation to night trains, are there beds on these trains?, and is it possible to carrey out this trip with one of the global 5 in 10 day passes? is it possible to do all this for 800 including interail pass.

Thanks in advance
frank

Hi Frank!

Istanbul - Sofia and Sofia - Beograd:https://rail.cc/en/istanbul-sofia-belgrade-night-train/f1641 (arr Sofia 1035)
Use the schedule planner https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route for the other connections

You should be fine with the 5in10 global pass - calculate with ~40€ extra for reservations (couchettes) in night trains. Beograd is mostly known for its party life, so depending on your interests maybe skip it for Ljubljana - but I'm not sure if that leaves you with good connections in combination with the 5in10 ticket.
800€ should be enough for your trip - I'd calculate with ~200€ for ticket and reservations which would leave you with 600€ for the rest. Given you stay some extra days in Istanbul and Praha before your pass starts/ends (lets say 14 days overall) that would leave you with ~40€ per day which will be enough for eastern europe countries. Of course it all depends a little on your needs, so maybe think about a little money for reserve.

Night trains usually have three kinds of accomodation - regular seats (six, sometimes eight per compartment), couchettes (six or four bunk-style beds in a comparment) and sleepers (one to three beds in a compartment). For couchettes and sleepers you need to make a reservation (rates are usually about those mentioned in the first link), seats are free sometimes or require a reservation as well.

Hope that helps so far - another useful link: https://rail.cc/en/first-interrail-tour/f3303
