Hi!
Well, if you cant get the reservation online (where did you try) you will have to get it at a train station - doesnt have to be neccessarily in Paris. Is Paris your first stop?
If it happens that the train is full (actually there are two direct TGV, leaving Paris Gare de Lyon at 0742 and 1524) you can go an alternative route via Switzerland. There are connection almost hourly either via Basel or Geneve (though you'd have to get a reservation for both trains)...there is also at least one connection where you'd be fine with a reservation only for the TGV:
Paris Gare de Lyon 1110 - 1435 Geneve
Geneve 1456 - 1730 Brig
Brig 1807 - 1845 Domodossola
Domodossola 1855 - 2035 Milano Centrale

My first stop is Amsterdam. I was looking at the rail timetables and all of a sudden the train i was planning to get - the 7.42 train - has disappeared from the listings! Is this normal for them to change so drastically, i thought they stayed pretty much the same.
I tried the www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepage_en.html site and the French site - neither of which would let me book online.

I just checked the timings of the 0742 TGV and it seems it isnt running on the following dates: :|
July 10, 11, 14, 24, 25
Aug 2-6, 9-13, 30, 31
Sep 1-19
So if you intend on travelling on one of these dates you'll have to either change the day or go via Switzerland.
