Hi,

I want to spend between three and six days in France. I've seen Paris. Where else would be good? I'm more interested in history and culture than beaches and nightlife, and am trying to avoid huge expenses.

Hi!

I really enjoyed Le Puy en Velay - quite a hidden gem in my opinion. You can get there either from Clermont-Ferrand or Lyon/St Etienne. There is only a HI Hostel as far as I know so you would need a HI membership to be able to stay there. But it's a really nice place to stay for one or two days: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4015/4710252120_879af462fb_b.jpg

Then there are of course the cities of large cathedrals...Reims, Rouen, Chartes. All certainly worth a stay for one day or so.

Lyon is supposed to be a very nice place - havent been there yet though. I enjoyed Bordeaux - from there you could also make a day trip to Saint Emilion, an old vine village.

In the pyrenees there is the spectacular Petit Train Jaune https://rail.cc/en/petit-train-jaune-latour-de-carol/f1343 ...its terminus in the valley, Villefranche, is a nice, small fortified town. We spent a few hours there last year before we went on to Perpignan and then by night train to Paris.

La Rochelle is nice, too. And you could go to Ile de RĂ© from there for some time at the beach or walking round the old villages.

Mont St Michel might sound a bit obvious (and is probably a bit crowded during the summer) but since it is so unique I want to mention it anyway.

Then there are also Strasbourg, Le Havre (including Honfleur) and many more...
