Hi all,
I am planning to do a eastern europe route on a months interrail ticket.
This is the route I hopefully wish to do but might skip a few countries while travelling. I'm planning to
stay in each city for about 2/3 days. Just planning to visit capital cities.
Poland > Slovakia > Hungary > Slovenia > Croatia > Bosnia > Montenegro > Serbia > Romania
>Bulgaria > Macedonia > Greece.
How safe is it travelling in eastern europe, i'll be travelling alone? Can I book the accomodation as I go along on my trip.
Is £1000 euros enough for the route I've mentioned + the interrail ticket.
It would be great to hear from someone. Thanks :)

Hi Jerry.
Maybe lets first fix the exact route before giving you details.
Most routes between the cities are listed at the country topics of our forum . Just have a look: https://rail.cc/en/countries
Warszawa - Krakow - Bratislava - Budapest - Zagreb - Ljubljana - Rijeka - bus to Split or Dubrovnik - bus to Montenegro (Bar) - Bar - Belgrade - Bucharest - Sofia - Skopje - Thessaloniki
It is save in Eastern Europe. Never had any problems. Join other travelers in night trains and don't use seats. Better pay for a cheap couchette or sleeper compartment where you can lock the doors.
And 1000 EURO should be fine for 1 month of Eastern Europe.
Just check the hostels on [ux]https://rail.shop/hostelworld[/ux] . Amazing cheap and good! :)

Hi Peter,
Thank you for such detailed info.
The route with the cities you have given sounds amazing. If i'm correct the route passes through all the countries I mentioned
except for Bosnia? Correct me if i'm wrong. I would like to go to Sarajevo.
Is it correct that I'll be using trains to get to all the places except the places you said by bus. I have looked at the country route forum for greece and am not sure what i'll have to do to get to Athens Greece from Thessaloniki.
Also I was just thinking to take my bank card with me as eastern europe have different currencies. Are ATM's available in the cities?
Thanks again :)

Hej Jerry...
The corner around Split, Dubrovnik, Bar and Sarajevo is a bit hard to travel by train. Nearly all (except Dubrovnik) have stations but aren't connected with each other. You always have to travel via Belgrade or Zagreb.
If you want to add Sarajevo without adding 18 hours of train travel, do it by bus.
But maybe SiDUDe will add some more information.
Thessaloniki-Athens: several connections per day. Always ask at Thessaloniki main station for a train connections with low or no supplements. As IC trains in Greece are sometimes very expensive to use. :o
ATMs: no problem in Eastern Europe. Did it as well this way.

Hi Peter
What do you mean by stations are not connected with each other. Woah :o 18 hrs, bus it is.
How much does a bus journey normally cost and how do you find one.
Thanks for the tip, will ask at the Thessaloniki station. Great to know I can use ATM's.
Peter any places you can recommend me to travel within eastern europe.
This forum is great I've already got so much information by reading different parts of the forum .
Thanks :)

Hello!
Youre route sounds fantastic and it sounds like youre pretty clued up already, so ill just offer some recommendations.
Id reccommend somewhere like Zadar on the Croatian coast, from which you should be able to get a bus to Sarajevo. From Sarajevo there are a couple of trains a day down to Bar, via Mostar, where you have to spend a night or 2, its amazing!
Dont stay in Bar, instead get a bus along the coast to somewhere like Kotor. Accomodation can be a little tricky in Montenegro (not many hostels) but you can find private accomodation easily enough - people wait for buses to arrive offering rooms at a very reasonable rate.
There are a couple of direct trains from Bar to Belgrade too, so that shoudlnt be too bad. From there getting into Romania wont be difficult, nor getting down to Sofia. Dont spend to long in Sofia, instead head out to Veliko Tarnovo (great city with large student population) or down to Rila.
From there you can take a bus to Skopje (several a day) and from Skopje if youre feeling adventurous (and dont need to get back into Serbia) take a day trip to Kosovo. If you have time, a trip to Ohrid would be good.
Hope this helps

Thank you both Sidude and Peter.
Peter last time I bought the ticket off STA travel shop. I think this time I'll buy it from this website.
Is it possible to pickup a booklet copy of this timetable whilst i'm travelling from one of the station.
Thanks :D

Hi!
Never saw this timetable printed, only as a PDF. Anyway, I prefer a proper timetable while travelling and can recommend the Thomas Cook European Railway Timetable. ;)

Hej Jerry.
Like Flow already said, I also never saw this kind of booklet except as PDF-file. And recommend as well (like Flow) the Thomas Cook European Railway Timetable which is available for example at Amazon.
And would be very nice to support our work with your purchase at [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux]

Hi Jerry.
Just check the country topics of our forum for prices. Most night trains are listed there with details:
https://rail.cc/en/countries
A 6-bed couchette is usually something about EUR 10.

Hello,
Just checked DB Bahn timetable website for a train from Sarajevo to Bar(Montenegro) and it showed a duration of just over 19hrs in total.
Is there a direct train which i can take or perhaps a bus. Also is there a night direct train.
Thanks again. :)

Hi!
Yeah, it takes ~ 19h. There is no direct night train - best connection I have found in a quick search:
Sarajevo 1135 - 1931 Stara Pazova
Stara Pazova 2034 - 0714 Bar
There probably are bus services as well but they arent included in InterRail.

Hi Peter, Flow, Sidude
Thank you guys for all the information and advice you guys gave me. The trip in Eastern europe especially the balkans turned out to be amazing :D Kotor, Mostar were absolutely cool and so were the other cities.
Peter I managed to get the recent schedules from Thessaloniki to Athens and vice versa. I will try(bit busy at the moment), scan the schedule sheet and upload it to this site. Also managed to find out how much the reservation costs.
Once again thank you guys :)
