How do you guys do it? I am printing out detailed maps of all my destinations from Google and studying the subway systems, which look very complex compared to the once in America.

Hi.
You get free maps at every subway station connected to one of the big European stations.
In most cases you have as well staff at information points or ticket windows to ask for.
Most hostels you can book via [ux]https://rail.shop/hostelworld[/ux] offer information on how to reach them arriving at a station. Then in the hostel they have as well maps and nice staff helping you.
So it is easy, you will see! :)

I've used a combination of things on my travel last summer.
1. Free tourist maps. Get them at the main train station of the city where they usually are handed out or at some tourist office.
2. Maps in metro stations and at random bus stops when I'm in the city. These helped me get around town a lot (even if I planned to walk somewhere)
3. Apps on my phone. I don't know if you're using Android, but I've used MapDroyd (which is like an offline Google Maps) and aMetro, an app that has every metro system in the world on it (be sure to download everything before you go). I'm sure there's also great apps for this on an iPhone.
4. When you're not a digital kinda guy, you can ask for a map of the metro system at a metro station. They usually have these for free or a small fee. I've done this in Budapest and Vienna (which has an incredibly complicated system).
I always recommend not just sticking to the digital maps for obvious reasons (battery dead = lost).
