Hi Everyone,

Me & my husband were looking to do a 4 week journey around the Mediterranean coast, perhaps by hiring a car, to explore some of the best beaches Europe has to offer. We are both 28 and want a bit of an adventure before we settle down and have kids, although we are not the active adventure type!! Much more beautiful beaches, fantastic food, and relaxing type of people (with the odd bit of partying thrown in too!) Having come across this site, it looks like our journey could be a lot more fun ( & cheaper - big bonus) to go by train (no worry of driving with a hangover!)

I could really do with some help planning and costing a route. We would probably be starting from Denia, Spain (want to visit Ibiza and Formentera first, but don't need train for this) and just follow the coast up Spain, across France and ending in Italy. We really want to include Corsica and Sardinia if possible, but could do this once train pass is finished and get ferry over from Italy and then fly back to UK from there. We just want to see and experience as many beautiful beaches and places we can along the route.

That's about all I know up to now, should would really appreciate any help, advice and recommendations for the journey, including the best tickets to buy and best places to stay along the way.

I appreciate any responses to help us on our way!

Hi.

If you really want to have a relaxing holiday, visiting small places, nice restaurants, ... it is maybe better to do it by a hired car. :)
It really depends on what you want to see exactly.
As keep in mind, you always have your backpack with you, you have the walks (or buses) to hostels and so on.

The cost will be definitely cheaper with an InterRail pass than with a car.
But in Spain you will have to pay supplements even for slower Regional trains. In Italy and France you can use the slow Regional trains for free... traveling along the coast. Very nice there. :)

Maybe read this topic first to get a bit an overview:

Thanks for a great reply!
As much as I know life would be a lot more comfortable and laid back going in a car, I think with the cost element the trains and a bit of effort on our part will be needed in order to make our trip a reality.

We could perhaps hire a car in Spain, then start the trains in France? Would it then be better to do a 10 in 22 ticket instead?
Now I know I maybe asking a bit much but I would really love to get most of the journey planned and even booked before we travel and would really appreciate all your help in getting this planned and booked.
Thanks again for your advice

The 10 in 22 InterRail Global Pass is a really good one concerning the value you get for the money you spent.

Concerning planing in advance...

Use the schedule planer to find connections: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route
And definitely read the step by step guide which link I posted already. As InterRail isn't all inclusive you have to work out your tour by yourself... :)

If you only use regional trains to jump from one small town to an other, you won't pay supplements.

You can book a lot of hostels in advance via for example [ux]https://rail.shop/hostelworld[/ux]
