Hi,

The information on these forums has been very helpful, but before I book my interrail ticket (I'm going to get the 10 in 22 days one, and travel in July), I thought I'd check my route with you, and see if you had any tips/advice. It's my first interrail trip, and I'll be travelling alone so a few things are a bit uncertain.

Firstly, I should add that I'm not yet sure how I plan to get from and back to the UK at the beginning and end of my trip. I'd like to visit Brussels, but I'm not sure if it would be cheaper to go to Holland by ferry instead of getting the Eurostar? Once I leave England, i plan on visiting the following for a couple of nights each;

Hamburg - with a day trip to Hannover and then night train from Hannover via Berlin to Prague... Prague - Krakow night train a couple of nights later...Krakow - Vienna night train a few nights later.... Innsbruck... Munich. I plan on spending more time in Bavaria than elsewhere, so that I can visit Munich and maybe Berchtesgaden and anywhere else worth a visit.

So, my questions... Firstly, is this route feasible for doing within 3 weeks? Also, what's the best way to get to Hamburg from UK, and then back to UK from Munich?

While in Krakow, I want to visit Auschwitz. Is it best to do this by train or bus, etc?

Also, in places with a vibrant nightlife such as Prague, is it really easy to meet people in hostels and go for a night out with them? Obviously clubbing alone would be a bit weird.

Finally (at last, I hear you say :os ) can anyone recommend places to visit in Bavaria? I'm looking for beauty and/or culture and historical significance.

Sorry for all the questions, but I just feel I need to talk this through with other travellers before I do it.

Thanks a lot, Adrian :)

Hi Adrian.

If you want to avoid using a flight, a nice option is by ferry via the Netherlands to Hamburg.
https://rail.cc/en/london-amsterdam-train/f3989
https://rail.cc/blog/from-london-to-amsterdam-with-the-dutchflyer/

But I recommend you to have a stop somewhere in between. Like you said maybe Brussels or Amsterdam.

Other option is for example by Eurostar to Paris, then by night train to Hamburg.
But I think you checked it already in the country topics of the forum and by using the schedule planer:
https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route

I also recommend you to have a stop in Berlin. Definitely with a nice night life... check the corner of Friedrichshain - also you will find a lot of cheap hostels there.

Concerning Auschwitz: if you travel by night train from Prague to Krakow, leave it in the morning at Oswiecim - there you have access to the KZ. Then continue in the afternoon to Krakow. And all this is only ONE travel day, as using the rule for night trains:
https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train

On you way to Munich, maybe have a look as well at Graz, Salzburg in Austria.

In Bavaria you have several nice cities:
Regensburg, Nürnberg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Füssen with the castle of Neuschwanstein.

About hostels: I often pick up there people to go out in the evening. The best is to stay in a dorm with 6 or 8 beds, so it is easier to meet someone - also I recommend the smaller hostels which are more personal, not too anonymous.... hostels with 20-50 beds are nice to meet others.

I hope all this will help you planing your trip. And if you want to support our forum, buy your official InterRail pass at [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux]
Thank you, Peter :)
