I am planning to travel from Nice to Milan at the end of July. There does not appear to be a direct train - the only option seems to be a marathon journey via Lyon and Geneva. This seems strange. I understand trenitalia may not have issued their summer timetables yet - is this correct and if so could this be the explanation for this?

Unfortunately, the two direct trains have been cancelled some months ago. But there are still good connections available which require a change of trains in Ventimiglia. The reason why you dont find them is that the database isnt upgraded yet, like you've said. So just enter a date before the timetable change next sunday to get an impression of the possible connections - timimgs are not likely to change substantially after next sunday. :)
