i'm just about to buy my month's pass and it's asking about ticket protection for £8. Now I know it's only £8 and that's always good to be safe, but last time I interrailed I didn't get the protection and everything was all cool. I know also that circumstances can change depending on where you are and the people around you, and this time I'll be on my own, but I don't want to waste £8 on something unnecessary as that could go towards a hostel! It seems to work that you'll get reimbursed on the remainder of your pass (how do they work out the remaining price to days?) or whatever you've spent on additional trains depending on what's cheapest. It seems like no matter what happened, I wouldn't exactly get much money back... I guess it's always good to have that knowledge that you will eventually get some money back but not before a lot of police hassle. And if I lose it, well, that'd be my own fault.
Basically, I'm just trying to find out if people have gotten this before, whether they've had any problems if they have had to report a pass lost/stolen, if people think it's worth it....
Thanks
Peter

Hi.
Like you said, it depends on yourself: where you stay, the people around you.
I never got stolen anything - not a ticket, not a passport or mobile phone or whatever. Oh okay... some food was stolen in a hostel kitchen, but that's normal. ;)
So never anything important within the last 15 years I am interrailing.
But on the other hand: I sometimes get mails like my ticket was stolen, what to do now - how do I get back home. And in most cases the thiefs didn't wanted to steal the ticket, they simply robbed the whole money pocket - of course with the ticket inside.
So always keep both things separated.
Often the most expensive thing is then to pay for getting home: if your ticket got stolen in Hungary and you want to travel back to the UK, it is a long and expensive way if you can't catch a cheap flight.
Let's say it this way: if you drink two beer less in a pub and spent the money for the ticket protection plan, it is okay.
If not... 99% of the travelers won't lose their InterRail passes during their trips.
Peter :)

Thank you. In the end I didn't get it. It's probably very stupid of me and it'll be sod's law that something will happen this time but last time I did keep ticket separate to money and everything else and I'll most definitely be keeping a watchful eye with being on my own. At least for me, if anything happens, I can find my way to Switzerland, stay with my boyfriend and cry at my idiocy...!
