I'm going to be travelling around Europe for 3 and a half months this summer and am looking to save money as much as possible. While I'm going to buy an interrail pass at some point, I want to avail of cheaper methods of travel whenever possible. Since I will be spending some time in Germany, I was wondering if it's possible to travel between the larger cities by bus? My planned route is COLOGNE - BERLIN - DRESDEN - MUNICH. I looked up the prices for trains and they seem to be incredibly expensive. Would I be better off with an interrail ticket for this part of my journey or could I save money and take buses between these cities?

Thanks,
John

Hi John.

Germany doesn't offer a good bus network - you definitely can't compare it to the UK or Eastern Europe.
Definitely better is to travel by train - in your case by InterRail.

There are special offers if you book in advance via the [ux]https://rail.shop/bahn[/ux] website.
As well tickets like Schönes Wochenende.

Peter :)

Hi Peter,

Thank you very much for your quick reply. So will most of the trains within Germany be free with an interrail pass? For example, I just checked on [ux]https://rail.shop/bahn[/ux] and it says that KOLN - BERLIN is 109 Euros. Will I not have to pay that price if I have an interrail ticket?

Thanks,
John

Hi John.

Buying single train tickets is expensive - not only in Germany, it is so the whole Western Europe. If you can not get a special discount, it is often even cheaper (but not ecological and much more stressful) to rent a car. :(

Germany is definitely a good country for InterRailers as you do not have to pay any supplements.
Only on the night trains - and those a very very cheap and comfortable!!!
And on the ICE Sprinter, a special business train running in the morning and evening between Berlin and Frankfurt. But I am sure, you wont meet this train! :)
You have very very good high speed trains and connections, at least every hour between the big cities. And all these trains are FREE!

Think about an ONE COUNTRY Pass GERMANY for example with 4 travel days within 1 month: EUR 136

Also check the country topic of Germany where you can find night train connections:

If you want to cross borders, buy a GLOBAL InterRail Pass, as it will be cheaper than multiple ONE COUNTRY Passes. :)
