I am planning on travelling between Venice and Ljubjana at the end of July. I realise there is no direct train link (during the daytime) but I was considering travelling via Villach in Austria. It looks like there is only a bus connection between Venice and Villach - is this correct? Does an Interrail pass entitle travellers to avail of free/discounted fares for the bus service?

Hi!

Yes, there is no direct daytime train between Venezia and Ljubljana. For the night train, have a look here: https://rail.cc/en/venice-budapest-night-train/f1487
For alternative day connections via Gorizia: https://rail.cc/en/venice-ljubljana-train/f3664

During the day, you can also go via Villach, as you mentioned. But only by bus, which is included in InterRail but there is a compuslory reservation payable: https://rail.cc/en/venice-villach-klagenfurt-bus-train/f3911
For connecting services to Ljubljana, use the schedule planner: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route
