Hi Everyone.

We are 2 Danish siblings who are planning interailling this summer.

But we are a little insecure about our travel route.

None of us know Bern in Switzerland very well, so if any of you guys have visited the city or have any negative/positive experience please write a comment? :|

We have the same situation about Milano. We kind of need a big city to go to after being in Venezia, it could be any city. We have thought of Wien for example, it just need to be a city with good train connections to the northern part of Germany/Denmark.

Any other comments to our route are all very welcome. :os

Thank you!

Greetings from 2 danish interaillers, Nikolaj and Julie

Hi Nikolaj and Julie ...

My personal preferences are either Zürich (Zurich) instead of Bern.
And Wien (Vienna) instead of Milano.

Both have good connections to the North.

Zürich to Denmark:
free IC train to Basel.

Vienna either via Berlin:
https://rail.cc/en/vienna-berlin-night-train/f3729
https://rail.cc/en/night-train/berlin-malmoe-en-300/58
then from Malmö/Lund over to Copenhagen.

or via Munich:
direct day train to Munich.

Hi Peter! Thanks for you suggestions!

But tell me, is there anything to see in zurich, have you been there?

And also, doesn't it take a long time tavelling from Valenzia to Wien, or how is that?

Zurich is simply nice. A nice night life, good places to sit outside. It is onlymy personal impression. I didn't like Milano - some others prefer Milano than Zurich.

Venice-Wien is easy by night train: https://rail.cc/en/venice-vienna-night-train/f3672

Or use the schedule planer to find connections: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route

Hi Dudes

As a swiss guy, I recommend to do it this way:

Sleep in Berne and enjoy the lovely atmosphere there, the old town of Berne is very impressing. Zurich is a little bit boring during the day, but it provides a nice nightlife. You can reach Zurich with the train from Berne in 57 minuts, so what I would do if I were you: Visit Berne, and do a day (or night... ;) ) Trip to Zurich.

PS: Look at some pictures of the Oldtown. Keyword by Google Pictures: Berner Altstadt

Hi Simon ... sounds like the perfect solution. It's also interesting for me doing it next time this way. Thanks, Peter :)

Hi again..

Thanks for all the good replies! We are probably going to visit both Bern and Zürich, it's gonna be nice!

But we have an other question: What do you do about trains. Do you have to book tickets at home, or can you wait to book tickets till you arrive to the city where you are travelling from? And is it expensive to travel in sleeping trains, with sleeping seats?

Thanks!

Hi.

You can always find connections without any extra costs. For example in Germany and Switzerland all important trains are free to use.
In Italy try to avoid Eurostar Italia trains and use instead the free IC trains.
In France and Spain you will have to pay supplements for the high speed trains.

Some helpful links for you:

- European train schedules: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route
- compare these to the supplements website: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation
- check the country topics for information on how to avoid trains with supplements and information about night trains: https://rail.cc/en/countries
- some trains (if needed) you can book online, others you will have to book at stations - just to keep in mind: you can always find free trains on the route you want to travel!
