Hello.
We are a family of three that will travel by inter-rail this summer. We have never taken the train for this distance, and we need advices on how to travel the distance and where to stop on the way. Near Nice we have an house-exchange so that is a final goal. But we would like to stop in Stockholm, Berlin and maybe one more place before we reach Nice. Which route do people recommend? Our child is 3 years old. We have traveled a lot, but mostly by plane. By train we have only traveled in Scandinavia and in France.
Best wishes

Hi Trude.
I suppose you are from Norway, right?
If so, Norway is your country of residence in which you can not travel for free.
The direct train down from Narvik to Stockholm will be then the cheapest solution for you.
But you will have to pay for a ticket from Narvik to Vassijaure which is the border station. It should be a maximum of EUR 10 per person.
Then you travel for free. Using the night train (I recommend it) is easy as you can buy the reservations online:
Narvik-Stockholm: https://rail.cc/en/narvik-stockholm-night-train/f1360
Then continue in direction of Malmö/Lund:
https://rail.cc/en/stockholm-malmoe-train-nigh/f4058
From Malmö you can either travel trough Denmark by day trains to Berlin, but a nice and cheap solution is this one by night train (especially as you can take a double bed cabin and your child is for free with you):
https://rail.cc/en/berlin-night-express-sweden-berlin/f1186
Then you are in Berlin.
From Berlin to Nice there are several ways down.
A comfortable one is via Paris.
Berlin-Paris by night train - you can reserve this train online in advance:
https://rail.cc/en/berlin-paris-train/f2545
From Paris go down to Nice either by:
- day trains TGV with supplements:
https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation/france/fr
https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation/tgv-sncf/42
- or by night train:
https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/france/fr
Reserve the trains for France in advance: either in Stockholm (I am not sure if it is possible in Narvik) or in Berlin (where it is definitely possible) as they easily get full in the summer months!
For details about the exact train schedules, use this link:

I hope all this will help you planing your trip. If you have some more questions, do not hesitate to ask! :)
And if you want to support our project and the work here at the forum, buy your official InterRail pass via [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux]
Thank you.

Thank you so mutch, Peter!
I know all about traveling from Narvik down to Malmø/Trelleborg. But I have never travelled further from my home town Narvik. The routes you suggest seems to be the ones I would prefer.
I will order the tickets through your site, and I will ask lots of Q before we go. :)
But next Q is on another topic.
Thanks again!!
