Hello,
Is there a day connection from Ljubljna to Venice? I read that a Casanova train connected Venice to Ljubljana in 4 hours. What about in the other direction ? ICANN only find lengthy connections via Villach or Nova Goriza.
Thanks !

Hi Christina!
No, there is no direct day train anymore between Ljubljana and Budapest. :| The EC Casanova was suspended in April 2008. :(
Travelling during the day is possible although a little more complicated than necessary. You have the following possibilities:
1) Travelling directly to Venezia via Nova Gorica. If you choose this option, I'd recommend taking the route via Jesenice and the Bohinj railway to Nova Gorica: :arr: https://rail.cc/en/train/ljubljana-to-venice
Some connections run via Sezana but I would recommend travelling via Jesenice.
2) Travelling as in the above connection until Monfalcone but staying on the train and go to Trieste for a short visit.
3) Travelling Ljubljana - Koper and then to Trieste by bus. From Trieste finally with regional train to Venezia.
4) Travelling to Sezana, then by bus to Villa Opicina and with tramway to Trieste. Then to Venezia by train again.

options 3 and 4 are quickest and have the most connections- buses KOp-TR and local Trains Tr-VNZ run hourly (less on sundays)-so you do not really need timetables etc. (takes about 1 -2 hrs)
And that eternal quest here; NONE of these trains need a RES. Bus is of course payable. in IT you must always buy bustickets before you board-in some tabaccherie or other shop.
routes 1 and 2 are far more scenic-but do check times on SLO side before setting out.

Hi guys,
Can I get a little clarification? So is the sleeper train for the Ljubljana to Budapest leg (leaving at 150am) still running. I have seen people say the through connection to Venezia or the day train is currently suspended, but not necessarily that the Ljubljana to Budapest over night part is. Also, can anyone tell me where to buy tickets in advance? I have a seen the odd comment that you buy them at the station but would rather not leave it to chance if possible.
Thanks,

Hi,
the Venezia - Budapest night train is suspended on its whole route; so, currently no overnight connection to/from Ljubljana as well.
However, there will be a Budapest - Pula night train running during the summer which will have similar timings to/from Budapest.
You can buy regular tickets online :arr: [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux] as soon as the train is official but is also no problem to get them at a station.
