Hi there,

I'm looking on planning a 4-week trip round (mostly Southwestern) Europe this July. Note I've never actually travelled alone before, so please feel free to hit me up with any advice/knowledge whatsoever! I won't discriminate ;)

I've only got a rough idea of my route, but so far I'm thinking of getting a cheap flight out to Portugal and returning back to UK via Paris. With this in mind, my trip would look something like this:

Portugal --> Spain ---> France ---> Italy ---> Germany (with potentially a trip to Prague in between) ---> Netherlands ---> Paris (where I would get the Eurostar back to London)

I've started planning a more detailed route:

Lisbon - Madrid
Madrid - Barcelona
Barcelona - Marseilles? Nice? Not sure where per se
France - Italy
Italy - Germany (Maybe Munich?)
Germany - Prague
Prague - Berlin
Berlin - Amsterdam
Amsterdam - Paris

As you can see it's a very general outline. I definitely plan on going to Amsterdam, Berlin, Lisbon, Barcelona, Madrid but, these capital cities aside, I am otherwise flexible and open to exploring & going by a less structured itinerary. If you've any ideas for a more interesting or straight-forward route then do let me know. For what it's worth, I only intend on visiting Madrid and Barcelona in Spain but otherwise I'd love to know what you think I should see in all of the other countries. Any particular towns/villages/cities etc (especially Italy- as I plan on exploring/spending a good chunk of time there- and Germany, as I'm quite ignorant when it comes to its lesser-known gems).

Also, the prospect of going it alone is quite daunting to say the least. What are the likelihoods of meeting people along the way? If you're toying with the idea of doing something similar then let me know :)

Hi.

An example for your route could be:

Lisbon - Madrid - Barcelona - Pyrenees (Petit Train Jaune) - Perpignan - Nice - Milan - Rome - Florence - Venice - Vienna - Budapest - Krakow - Prague - Berlin - Amsterdam - Paris - UK

Of course you can skip or add some cities...
As soon as you know your route, let us know and we can give you more details here at the forum .
Also check the country topics, there you will find a lot information about the single trips from city to city:

Hi Peter,

Thanks very much for the input. As I'm mostly looking to do a trip around Southwestern Europe (and only have 28 days!) I'll have to skip on a lot of those countries. I do like the idea of taking the yellow train through France onto Italy, though! Will have to look more into that :)

The Petit Train Jaune is definitely worth, especially going down from the Pyrenees to Perpignang:

If you want to avoid the expensive direct night train going directly from Perpignang to Milano:

you will have to stop some where. Maybe then in Nice... :)

As soon as you know more details, let me know and I can give you details on connections. Peter :)
