Hello there. Myself and my friends are first-time interrailers, leaving in September and using the 22-day continuous pass. We were considering taking roughly this route, but weren't sure if this would be too many countries (we also want to try our best to avoid any supplements on trains):

Newcastle - Amsterdam (ferry)
Amsterdam - Berlin
Berlin - Krakow
Krakow - Prague
Prague - Bratislava
Bratislava - Budapest
Budapest - Vienna
Vienna - Ljubljana
Ljubljana - Bern
Bern - Paris
Paris - Brussels
Brussels - Amsterdam - Newcastle (ferry).

Although we'll probably end up missing a couple of those cities out, as it does seem a bit many for 22 days. Another thing I was wondering about is the transport between the Ijmuiden ferry port and Amsterdam city centre. Is there a train station near the ferry port?

Thanks in advance,
Greig.

Hi Greig.

It is a lot ... but it is possible. Depends on you if you want to make kilometres on rail tracks or also relax in some cities.
But better to have some more places in your planing and later during your trip cut it down a little bit. :)

Amsterdam Centraal station - IJmuiden:
Either by ferry (starting/ending directly behind the main station: Fast Flying Ferry).
Or by train to Haarlem, then continue by bus to IJmuiden.
And if I remember right, there are direct buses offered by the ferry company.

Some information for your trip:

Amsterdam - Berlin: https://rail.cc/en/amsterdam-berlin-train/f2346

Here I would change the trip to:

Berlin - Prague: https://rail.cc/en/berlin-prague-train/f3361

Prague - Krakow: https://rail.cc/en/prague-krakow-night-train/f4027

Krakow - Budapest: https://rail.cc/en/krakow-budapest-night-train/f3305

Budapest - Bratislava: Use a free and direct day train, otherwise you will have to pay a supplement.

Bratislava - Vienna: https://rail.cc/en/bratislava-vienna-wien-train/f3972

Vienna - Ljubljana: free direct day train.

Ljubljana - Bern: https://rail.cc/en/belgrade-zurich-night-train/f1897 | Zurich-Bern by free day train.

Bern - Paris: TGV Lyra (direct train - supplement EUR 5 - https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation/switzerland/ch )

Paris - Brussels: https://rail.cc/en/paris-brussels-bruxelles-train/f3992

Brussels - Amsterdam: https://rail.cc/en/brussels-bruxelles-amsterdam-train/f3994

I hope this will help you. If you want to support our project and the forum, buy your official InterRail passes via [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux] ... thank you.
Peter :)

Thanks a lot for your help! If we had to miss out a couple of cities which ones would you recommend we didn't bother with?

I would could of the following cities in that order (only my personal opinion): Bratislava, Bern and Brussels.
Don't hesitate to ask if you have some more questions. :)

On some of the trains it says they're only running May-September. Do some of the night trains not run in September?

Hi!

What particular connections are you talking about?

In my opinion you should be fine and all important trains along your route should run all-year. If you provide me details I can check by myself if you want. ;)

Thanks very much for all the help. We have been discussing it, and I think we are going to miss out Brussels and Bern. Also, we have decided we'd like to visit Split in Croatia, where would be best to add this to the trip?

Budapest - Split (via Zagreb) - Ljubljana (either via Zagreb or Rijeka, but Zagreb is probably easier).

Check the schedule planner and the relevant country boards of the forum for further details. :)

Thanks for the quick reply! Is Zagreb worth visiting for a day or so?
