Hey Guys!!
I know this is an interrail forum so apologies for posting a bit off topic, mods if you want to move or delete this then go ahead. I got a huge amount of help for my IR trip last year here and am now planning a trip in Thailand/Vietnam and thought since there are alot of seasoned travellers here then I may be able to get some advice.
Myself and a friend are moving to indonesia for a year in June so are going to head away about 5 weeks early and get some travelling in Thailand and hopefully a bit of vietnam too before we arrive in Jakarta. Just wondering if anyone has any advice about travelling in thailand and routes to do, places not to miss etc. Our rough plan at the moment is to fly into Bangkok (we're going on may 14th so i am REALLY hoping the riots have settled a bit by then!!!!) and spend some time there, then go on up to the north of thailand around the Chiang Mai area for a bit. we would like to if possible then to see some of vietnam and cambodia although I know time might be too tight. After that we are planning on heading down to the Islands around Phuket (probably not Phuket itself since it is so comercial). I am thinking about maybe getting my PADI diving license on Ko Tao. Thats our very rough idea at the moment so if anyone has any advice or tips or anything at all then I would hugely appreciate it!
Another thing someone may be able to help me with is our luggage. Since we are moving to Jakarta we will have quite alot of stuff with us but do not want to carry it all around while travelling. What we were thinking was of leaving some stuff in the left luggage in Bangkok airport (although nothing valuable as I know it is not the most reliable) and collecting it before we head on to Indonesia. Just wondering if anyone has any better suggestions than that!
Apologies again mods if you don't want this thread here, i completely understand.
And thanks in advance for any help
:)

Hi.
In Thailand you can travel as a lot by train ... so it is not absolutely off topic. ;)
Best is to buy the train tickets directly at the stations, in Bangkok there are even ticket machines.
If you use a 1st class night train (really cheap and 2 bed compartments, it will be very cold inside like in a fridge) ... :)
Maybe to add... I enjoyed a lot the city with old ruins of the past called: Sukhothai.
Rent a bicycle for 3 days and explore everything. Really nice.
In the South it's maybe better to go in the corner of Krabi... and then to one of the islands.
In Bangkok itself I enjoyed the weekend marked ... everything you need and really cool shirts... :)
Have fun planning.
Peter :)
