1. Is it possible to travel by train from Bucharest to Budapest on 22 July 2010 and if so is the travel at night or during the day and how much will it cost for my wife and I? Is it safe to travel by train?
2. We would like to travel by train form Budapest to Prague. What will be the cost and when do the trains run on 26 July 2010?
3. Is there a train from Prague to Amsterdam and will this be available on 2 August 2010. How long is the journey and what is the cost?
Is it best to buy the tickets at the starting point station or should they be booked ahead of time?
Please help me to understand the system. We are from South Africa and will have arrived in Bucharest from Amsterdam on a river cruise.

Hi Jack.

First: as you are from South Africa, you will need an EURAIL Pass which is nearly the same like InterRail. Check this website for details: https://rail.cc/en/eurail
For InterRail you need European passports or a residency of 6 months in an European country.

I am not sure if Eurail is valid in all Eastern European countries you want to travel. Check it via the website mentioned above.

But these details are the same for InterRail and Eurail.

General train schedules of Europe: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route

For all connections you also have day trains. For the night trains I recommend 4 or 3 bed cabins or if you want to spent the money Double Bed cabins. You can lock the doors of your cabin from inside.

Bucharest-Budapest: https://rail.cc/en/bucharest-budapest-night-train/f1606

Budapest-Prague: https://rail.cc/en/budapest-prague-night-train/f1469

Prague-Amsterdam:
https://rail.cc/en/prague-amsterdam-night-train/f3748
https://rail.cc/en/prague-amsterdam-train/f2546

If you have the time and want to visit Berlin, use a day train from Prague to Berlin:
https://rail.cc/en/prague-berlin-train/f3360
https://rail.cc/en/berlin-amsterdam-train/f2407

And change there to the night train to Amsterdam later in the evening.
Even if you stop for only 2 hours in Berlin, it is worth as the main station (Berlin Hbf) is just some meters away (10 minutes walk) from the German Reichstag (parliament) and the Brandenburger Tor.

Peter :)
