Hello

I'm just finalising my itinerary for a month of interrailing in June.
From Ljubljana I plan to travel to Switzerland, via Zurich, before making my way to Paris where I'll complete my trip.

I have about three days to spend in Switzerland, and one travel day on my interrail ticket to spare. I can't decide whether to head straight from Zurich to Berne and stay there for three nights before heading on to Paris - or to go straight to Interlaken before Paris? Or maybe I should stay in Berne and take a day trip to Interlaken ?

Has anyone been to either of these cities and thinks I absolutely cannot miss out on one of them? How possible is it to do Interlaken, or Bern, in a day ? Would it be a waste?

Would love to hear your thoughts so I can finally decide which is the best plan for my trip

Thanks

Natalie

Hi!

Umm...If you go to Interlaken it is more the surroundings that are worth seeing I guess - the town itself is not too big and there's probably not enough to do that it's worth to stay there three days. However, Interlaken is the perfect base for a trip to the Matterhorn Area - unfortunately you dont get any reductions for the railways you'd need to get there. But the scenery is really unique and certainly worth a visit. :)

In Bern there's certainly more to see and do during a three days stay. With your one spare day of your InterRail pass you could make a day tour through the Swiss alps: Bern - Brig (via Kandersteg) - Montreux - Zweisimmen - Spiez - Bern is a very nice route! :)

When in Interlaken you can also take the boat to Iseltwald (14 km outside Interlaken).

Hi Flo

We're currently in Bern and plan to travel through the Alps and to Interlaken tomorrow.

Do you know the best way to include Interlaken in to your recommended route? (Bern - Brig (via Kandersteg) - Montreux - Zweisimmen - Spiez - Bern is a very nice route!)
We want to make the most of the day and include as much stunning scenary as possible!

Thank you!!

Sorry to be a pain, but we're also worried this route will have us on the train all day. If possible we'd like to get off a couple of times during the day to have a quick look at some of the villages / nice views close up.

Can you recommend a good day through the alps on the train, along with a couple of beautiful places to stop for a drink/ photo opportunities for example?

If you think we should not go to Interlaken in favour of some more beautiful places, then please let us know your thoughts!

Thanks Flo!!

Hi,

hope you manage to read that before you leave in the morning...just returned home now. ;)

Umm...

First go to Interlaken over the old famous Lötschberg route (same connections runs every hour):

Bern 1035 - 1102 Spiez
Spiez 1112 - 1224 Brig

If you want to have a short walk around Brig - then you have to decide:

Option 1:

Brig 1321 - 1351 Domodossola
Domodossola 1405 - 1552 Locarno :arr: Centovalli railway
And then return to Interlaken or Zürich via the second large (and probably most famous) Swiss Alpine crossing, the Gotthard route. There's one good connection to Interlaken via Bellinzona, Zürich, Bern which takes ~5h and leaves three mintues past each hour. To Zürich it is ~ 3h.

In Locarno you could also have a walk around the city, but overall this would be a route where you'd sit more time on the train watching different spectacular landscapes than walking around the villages.

Option 2:

From Brig go down towards Lac Leman - maybe have a first stop at Montreux:

Brig 1357 - 1514 Montreux
Montreux 1745 - 1945 Zweisimmen
Zweisimmen 2003 - 2046 Spiez
Spiez 2135 - 2156 Interlaken

Sorry, cant give you more details about nice places for a stop - or any other destination than Interlaken for tomorrow since I dont know where you wanna go afterwards... But both options provide really nice views of Switzerland - one cant do much wrong here. :)
Hope it helps and wish you a nice day!
