There are other connections that avoid the Thalys supplement problem. There are three ICE trains per day which I think you can use without reservation provided you have an international ticket (ie. an Interrail) and are travelling Belgium/Germany. For travel solely within Belgium (ie.Bruxelles-Liege), there is a supplement. There are also interregional trains about every two hours from Liege to Aachen (Aix la Chapelle in French). These will not always show up on internet searches for longer journeys (eg. Bruxelles-Koln), since the connections are slower than the direct trains. However, they are free to IR holders. NB. They are normally operated by old 2-car electric 'dinkys', which are clean but not the most luxurious train you will travel on in Europe!
