I'm going interrailing for the first time with a friend in July. We're both girls so we're probably going to opt for private rooms in hostels, never having stayed in hostels before.

Any tips on travel time or accommodation in any of these cities? We're running into trouble planning how long we should spend in different places and if this is a feasible plan givn that we're getting the 22day ticket. Also, should we break the Barcelona to Milan trip by staying somewhere in France on the way?

Any help would really be appreciated! Thanks

Hi!

Paris - Toulouse: Either by TGV via Bordeaux (~5h 15) or by Téoz via Limoges (~6h 30); both are trains with compulsory reservation
Tolouse - Barcelona: Have a look at the Petit Train Jaune (ask if you need details)
Barcelona - Milano: There is a direct https://rail.cc/en/train/barcelona-to-milanvnight train which is rather expensive compared to other night trains but on the other hand it saves you quite some time. The other option is to go along the Mediterranean coast and make a stop somewhere at the Cote d'Azur - I prefer Nice - for a day or two. From Nice you could make trips to Monaco, Antibes, Grasse etc... Also have a look https://rail.cc/en/train/marseille-to-nice here for connections from Nice to Milano
Milano - Venezia/Venezia - Firenze/Firenze - Roma: Frequent fast AV, ES, IC services (reservation required); alternative connections by free regional trains

You can search online for detailed timetables: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route
Here is a list of trains requiring additional supplements: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation

22 days should just be enough time for this trip - you can get the 10in22 flexi pass. I assume you want to go to Paris by plane and fly home from Roma? If so, activate your InterRail pass only the day you leave Paris for Toulouse and go to Roma on the last day of validity - so you can extend your trip for a few days but still use a 22 day ticket. :)
If you buy the 10in22 ticket you can also make use of the 1900-rule: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train

About accomodation: You dont need to worry about going to dorms in hostels - they usually have separated female, male and also mixed dorms. Also in most night trains you will find separated male and female couchettes.

Just ask if you have further questions - and if you like to support the work we're doing here at the forum and website, please buy your official InterRail ticket at [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux] . Thank you. :)

I wouldn't spend much time in Milan and rather visit Genova when you're on the way from Barcelona to Venice.
In Milan is the only attraction the dome i guess.. Have been there two years ago and i've never been in such a dirty city..
