Hello,

Hubby and I are planning to use a Gobal pass for our trip. We have not made reservations or a set schedule. We are very fleible and plan to stay in whatever city we decide to at the time. My question is.. we are residients of Switzerland and plan to start from Basel to Venice. I realize we get half fare in our own country, but how does the first leg work? Buy a ticket from Basel to Venice? or buy a ticket from Basel to some border town, then use rail pass from there to Venice?

Also, when we order our tickets we have to give a start date, does this mean the ticket is validated for that day and our month coninuous begins that day.

Looking forward to your response as we should be leaving next Friday.

Hi.

The start date you have to select when you purchase your ticket is the first day your ticket is valid = from this date your ticket is valid for 1 month.

Example: you select the 20th of April 2010 as start date, then your ticket is valid from the 20.04.2010 - 00:01h in the morning until the 19.05.2010 - 23:59h at night.
The 1 month is sometimes 28, 30 or 31 days - it depends on the month you travel. :)

For your first trip, you will have to buy a discounted ticket till the border - from there continue to Venice.
I am not sure if SBB (the Swiss national railway company) is offering special normal discounts to Italy (check their website sbb.ch) - then you could travel on such a special ticket to Venice. Stay there some days and start from there interrailing. So you could even save some more days of you InterRail ticket.

Peter :)
