Hi there

I'm going on interrail 4th of may and i'm thinking if it´s better to buy the interrail pass when I come to Frankfurt (where I´ll start travelling) or is it better to buy it online and get it sent to Iceland?

Hi.

If you buy online you support at the same time our project and all the work here at the forum, not only an anonymous company.
Delivery is by secure DHL express mail service to Finland, usually within 48 hours on business days.
Order at the middle of April and you are fine and have your ticket with you to start immediately after landing in Frankfurt. :)

Have a sunny trip, Peter :)

Hi Peter

I'm just thinking why does the ticket go to Finland? We are from Iceland :D And how much do the ticket cost at your forum?
My friends went on a interrail and were thinking if it would have been cheaper to travel without the Interrail pass because they had to pay so much extra for every train they took during the trip. How do we know when and how much extra we have to pay? This is maybe a little bit fuzzy for us because in Iceland we don´t have trains so we don´t know this way of travel well :)

Hi!

I dont know where you wanna go during your trip but I try to give you some examples and advice concerning wheter it's cheaper to get InterRail or regular tickets. ;)

First, what can you do with your InterRail pass?
- You can travel for free on almost all trains in 30 European countries - only some minor private railways doesnt accept InterRail, but they often grant you a reduction on the regular fare. But these small railways mainly serve places where you never have heard of - no troubles to get at all major destinations with InterRail! ;)
- Like your friends told you there are some trains which require an additional reservation fee - but this fee is payable whether you are travelling with InterRail or regular tickets. You can find a list of the trains which require such a supplement here: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation

Is it cheaper to get normal fare tickets?
- Where do you travel? Train travel in Western and Central Europe is more expensive than in Eastern Europe - also, in Eastern Europe there are very few trains with supplements. Of course you will find some very cheap advance fares but those are limited and you have to get them very early - you then are fixed on a certain day and train. With InterRail you can hop on the trains just like you want (with the already mentioned exception of the trains with compulsory reservation).
- An example from France: TGV Paris - Marseille: With InterRail 3€ or 10€ supplement - normal fare ticket bought four days in advance: between ~60€ and ~€100
- Countries where you will need to get reservations for most long distance trains are: France, Italy, Spain, Portugal. I've been travelling two weeks in France, Portugal Spain and Germany in Februaray with InterRail and compared prices afterwards: 517€ with InterRail compared to 1142 with normal fare tickets. :)

Just some few words from my side - if something's uncelar, just ask.

Thanks for the answers. We ordered the tickets today but we are wondering what will happen if the tickets wont be here (in Iceland) in time (we leave 4th may) because of the vulcano eruption and the flight delays because of that. We paid for pass security cost... but is that going to help if we won´t get the tickets in time?

Hi.
The tickets will definitely arrive in time, as they are send by DHL Express mail service. Much faster an priory to ordinary mail. :)
Keep me up to date and let me know when the tickets arrived. I bet it will be Wednesday. :)
Have a sunny and volcano-free weekend!
Peter :)

We tried to buy the ticket through the internet but it was some confuse about the credit card. Also we found it to little time until our trip were supposed to start so we didn´t take the chance of buying the ticket online because soooo many flights have been delayed and cancelled here in Iceland the last week and a half and there has been so much transport-chaos here because of this volcano eruption. We are sorry that we weren´t able to buy it online and support you, we wanted to support your project because this webpage is really helpful :)

Although we want to ask: Can we buy the interrail pass in every train station or how does it work? Is it much more expensive to buy the interrail pass not online?

Thanks,
Sturla, Unnur and Silja.

Hi.
No problem ... ;)
You can try to buy it in Frankfurt Airport station. Should be possible.
If not, use a train to Frankfurt Main station - there you will get it definitely. But I am sure it will be possible as well directly at the airport.
The fares are the same like mentioned on the internet - I think there is a service charge of 2 EUR ... but I am not sure.
Have a sunny trip, Peter :)
